no ****. I just hopes she makes something of the opportunities she's been afforded. She does say she'd like to go to Spelman and hasn't gotten accepted there yet.

I don’t blame her for taking advantage of preferential treatment, if that is indeed what happened. The question is: did a white kid with better grades, and just as much in financial need, get skipped over because the colleges tilted the advantage toward the black student? If so, it is unfair that he wasn’t given the opportunities she was, and due solely to skin color. Poor whites with good academic records deserve a chance too.

What information do you have that would lead you to this suspicion?

Because I know it’s done for admissions (skipping over whites to admit lower-scoring blacks) so it is definitely possible the same is done for scholarships. If that is what happened here, it’s wrong - and unfair.

P.S. what is that emoji supposed to be?

So, that's an average of less than $50K/school, divided by 4 years, that's ~$12K/yr.

Big whoop.

If 12k is no big deal then why are libs crying for FREEEEEEEEE college?

Yeah, you can get her rough average scholarship level of 55k per school from most decent (non-elite) schools with 90th percentile test scores and nothing else.

What are you yammering about, exactly?

My hometown state university costs:

In-state freshmen
Tuition and fees (12-18 credits per semester): $14,524
Room and board (double room/silver meal plan): $10,522
Total for two semesters: $25,046

Non-Michigan freshmen
Tuition and fees (12-18 credits per semester): $39,830
Room and board (double room/silver meal plan): $10,522
Total for two semesters: $50,352

https://admissions.msu.edu/cost-aid/...s/default.aspx

So, $12K/yr would pay for about half of the total bill for an in-state student, less than 25% of a year for an out of state student.

I applied to 3.
Most kids don't. My two kids applied to 6 and 4, and still got merit scholarship offers. Not $1 million worth, obviously, because far fewer schools were involved, but the amount of scholarship money offered was not insubstantial in the grand scheme of the cost of attendance.

Correct.

Your GPA or test scores aren't the end all be all of what colleges/scholarships look for in students. There's a reason why alot those "straight A" kids take all those fake character building courses and do "volunteer" work. Some of those kids that get the highest grades either cheat or they are lifeless robots. Some people with grades like her can come off as more normal individuals with great social skills. And oddly enough in the US, having great social skills can take you alot farther than good grades if we're being honest.
