Imagine you are a high school senior at a good but far from elite high school (average SAT 1085), sporting a good but hardly stellar GPA. You want to study psychology and you've applied to a bunch of mid-rank colleges. What level of scholarship funding would you expect to be offered? How would your race factor into it? If you are black, would you miss out on scholarship offers due to the "systemic racism" we hear so much about?

Quote:
A high school senior who applied to over 20 colleges has been offered more than $1 million in scholarship money.

Shanya Robinson-Owens of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, has been accepted into 18 schools. The 17-year-old currently attends George Washington Carver High School of Engineering and Science.
Shanya's aunt, Christine Owens, told "Good Morning America" that Shanya was always a star student, though the $1,074,260 in total scholarships was a pleasant surprise.

"We are overjoyed," Owens said. "I knew she wouldn't have a problem getting into colleges, but we didn't know they would award her this much money in scholarship funds."

Shanya said she was accepted to Moravian College in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania; La Salle University in Philadelphia; Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Missouri; Temple University in Philadelphia and Cabrini University in Radnor, Pennsylvania, among others.

"I was pretty excited," Shanya said. "I wasn't really expecting it."

Shanya said she currently has a 3.2 grade point average.

3.2? That is a B average. Also you have to wonder if that is weighted as well. Reading about the school 100% of the students come from low income families. There is zero doubt that is why she is getting all that money for school.

She applied to 18 schools.

Who else does that?
I applied to 3.

I think she's getting big offers from all those mid-rank schools because they are absolutely desperate to enroll enough diversity to keep from appearing racist. The supply of black kids who are decent students is far, FAR exceeded by the demand. Virtually all African American high school seniors with credentials better than Shanya's have been hoovered up by elite schools, leaving her as the cream of the remaining diverse crop. No white or Asian student with similar grades would get similar offers.

Why not? She can now tour all 18, likely with all expenses paid. She's a rock star.

Not sure why this is so surprising, as the schools listed are not first-tier schools. She also applied to a slew of them.

if her GPA is unweighted, then she's a B average student, at a solid but not the best school, with solid credentials. She's probably deserving of some scholarship money for sure, but 1 million? Come on...

It's not surprising to me, but it should surprise anyone who thinks "systemic racism" in America makes it difficult for black kids to attend college.

Take it up with them then. Times are changing and I’m happy for this generation taking advantage of the opportunities.

Look at the schools. They are not the best but just decent schools.

Her total is 1 million because she applied to so many schools.
