There is homelessness problem in places, I did not think possible.
Even in Harrisburg PA, and Rhode Island. I thought never thought there be homelessness in Philly either. Its not that expensive. Harrisburg PA though? Come on Harrisburg PA ! ! !
I get that these people probably have mental problems. But if our institutions are overwhelmed that much, for such a huge spillover onto the streets, we are in serious trouble.
Funny thing is mental illness can cover a long and wide spectrum. Lots of people can be classified and mentally ill but functioning. They can live normal lives, hold down jobs, pay the bills on time. They just have to wake up every morning, take a hard look in the mirror and tell themselves to get their sh** together before heading to work.
With that said, again if there are this many people who have mental illness bad enough to put them out on the street, this country has a problem on their hands.
............. They just have to wake up every morning, take a hard look in the mirror and tell themselves to get their sh** together before heading to work...........
Mental illness is a LOT more complicated than that.
It doesn't take mental illness to put someone on the street. If you went through bad times that put you in the street where people constantly harass you and you are in fear of your life on a regular basis, it would mess with your head too. If you had to sleep out in the open where someone can just sneak up and attack and rob you while you sleep at any moment then it would drive you crazy too. The trauma of being homeless can cause PTSD in many people.
People think homelessness is a big city issue. The reality is...people from small towns that end up homeless end up in big cities-because thats where the help is. Know why theres not much homelessness in South Dakota? Cause they freeze to death in the winter.
And a big part of the problem is that we essentially don't know how to properly treat those with mental illness. We arrest homeless, and send police after them, when really they need social workers to help them with underlying mental issues.
I feel like there are two problems we could solve tomorrow if we really wanted to.
1. Cost of living is just too high. Gov't needs to find ways to reduce it.
2. Mental illness is out of control because psychology, for the most part, doesn't work. We need to insure those who are mentally ill get other options.. like nutrition... that haven't been tried. Everyone doesn't get mental health treatment because it is overpriced and under effective.
IMHO another thing... there are thousands of homes in Detroit that have been abandoned. Ship homeless up there and give them homes. Seems like a win win.
I wonder how many illegal aliens are filling up public housing in those cities? Once they have a baby on American soil, that little citizen gets the whole family into public housing. Also, refugees are set up in public housing when they come into the country. Maybe we should start putting our own citizens first.
Unless the people are a danger to themselves or others, they aren't going to be locked up in institutions anymore. They came up with the idea that dumping the people on the street would be good for the person (actually would save money, but they claimed "rights" for the people) with the idea that they would provide for the needs of the people outside the institutions, but they did not follow up on that. They are a "throw away" population, like with the elderly in NYC where they put the sick in the nursing homes to eliminate some "expenses".
I was told that the schools here use money meant to feed the homeless for people that aren't actually homeless but living with other family members. (Illegal aliens who do not qualify for food stamps, living several families together, but they don't mention that.)
If we followed "charity begins at home", we would not be seeing so many issues with our homeless. There is always plenty of money for refugees and illegal aliens!
