Crime typically increases during difficult economic times.

The government typically only sends out free stimulus money during such times also.

Severe almost unbridgeable divide in society and politics

Staggering Covid induced stress, economic and otherwise.

"Minneapolis effect," which is the "Ferguson effect" on steroids.

Criminals, almost by definition, do not restrain themselves from breaking the law. Thus, they need to be restrained from the outside, which is most often accomplished by the police. But this past year, "defund the police" has been the rallying cry and there has been a reduction in police coverage in many cities. Thus, the external restraint is reduced. It should come as no surprise that, in such an environment, criminals are going to take advantage.

Spring is a historically big time for crime and social revolts to increase.

Can’t have anything to do with defund the police and handcuffing them from doing their job? I couldn’t imagine being a cop in this environment.

I’ll admit reduced police funding could be a component, but economic hardship is still a likely major component.

Another factor: People have less trust in cops after the George Floyd killing. Many people want better policing, but what they see makes them as much afraid of cops as criminals.
