This is part of what I've been talking about. The thugs who committed such violence in Philadelphia aren't going to be scared by the law.
I want to elaborate on what you said about the killer doing what he did because he didn't like what his mother had to say to him. This is a culture of violence. This is a culture of "you disrespect me and I kill you". Many gang shootings are like this. Many personal disputes involve this. It is indeed selfish behavior. It is also lack of coping, and someone who believes violence is the answer to all problems. I agree that selfishness is a big part of it. It's huge. However, I also say that anyone who would kill their own mother over a simple disagreement is someone who has no coping skills. It is a person who doesn't believe in disagreeing respectfully.
Now, as for the selfishness, I do agree that violent criminals are basically selfish. They don't care about anyone. I just showed you one who would kill his own mother. Anyone who would kill their own mother will have no problem killing anyone else. It's about an individual who doesn't value anyone else's life, not even their own. The hood rat/thug mentality is life fast, die young, and get whatever you want by any means necessary, even if it requires killing someone. This is partly what violent behavior involves. It's "do it my way or you're dead". It also involves the violent party not being concerned about the possible of getting killed. When someone is a nihilist, and a violent nihilist at that, fear of punishment or death isn't going to sway them.
