Quote:
The recent string of multiple-victim incidents of gun violence and police shootings of black Americans has once again resulted in renewed calls for restrictions on gun ownership. President Biden has said that executive instructions to various branches of the Federal government will attempt to reduce the frequency and possibility of such violence.

Some of his proposals, however, are merely using the gun control argument as a cover for more government redistributive intervention within the society. Thus, when the White House released a statement on April 7, 2021 detailing its plans in this direction, one of them called for a $5 billion investment over eight years to support “community violence intervention programs” with a key part of it being “to help connect individuals to job training and job opportunities.” The Department of Health and Human Services will be also directed to “educate” state governments in better using Medicaid funding to better subsidize such interventionist projects.

In other words, if only we expand notoriously wasteful and ineffective government job training programs, gun violence magically will be reduced. If only “unemployed” gun-using criminals can be taught a nonviolent job skill, they will stop robbing convenience stores and stop killing people in gang-related drive-by shootings! Plus, once the national mandated minimum wage is raised to $15 an hour, there will be long lines, obviously, of prospective employers eagerly waiting to hire former street thugs with their newly certified government-provided entry-level employment “skills.” Who knew it could be so simple?

A very thoughtful presentation

Our Constitutional gun rights have absolutely nothing to do with protecting yourself from 'criminals'...

The intent of the 2nd Amendment was so citizens could protect themselves from a tyrannical govt.

Reading many of these gun threads, I think many people are misunderstand the 2A.

Technically speaking, 'exercising your 2nd Amendment rights' would be if someone threatened a govt official with a gun.

You've got it backwards, it's if a 'government' threatens a citizen with a gun.

Heller decision addressed the constitutionality of being able to bear arms to "protect yourself from criminals".

They ruled that it was part of the 2A.

As far as protecting yourself from your tyrannical government these days with your guns. Good luck with that.

Better gun checks would help ensure that mentally ill people didn't own guns. The people who need guns are those who live way out in the middle of nowhere and need to shoot critters or very occasionally a dangerous person in self defense. Other reasons for guns would be for hunting and for the sport of target shooting.

But strict gun checks need to come first. Without that, the good gun owners are made to look bad and risk getting really strong laws against them.

Let be realistic.
2A no longer works, and, actually, never worked.

Current govt is pretty much tyrannical. And?
Where are all those 100mln+ people with 600mln+ guns?
Right, sitting home and being afraid of more restrictions

"Freedom", aha "Well regulated militia", yeah, right.

No person - not even one! - stood up. What other proof do you need that 2A is just much ado about nothing?

Just give up this absolutely useless amendment already. People of 1776 could have used it. Today's people - just forget it.

That line didn't age well.
