Watched this yesterday. Hadn't seen it in decades. Wow, some things never change.
I highly recommend watching it, because it's a classic if for no other reason, but mostly because there are a lot of points made which couldn't be more relevant than they are today.
Quote:
Naive and idealistic Jefferson Smith, leader of the Boy Rangers, is appointed to the United States Senate by the puppet governor of his state. He soon discovers, upon going to Washington, many shortcomings of the political process as his earnest goal of a national boys' camp leads to a conflict with the state political boss.
Except how he'd be a pedo and either be corrupted or blackmailed into being your typical DC swamp creature.
If he was a decent human being he'd at best last one term before being convinced to pack up and never come back.
One of the very best classic movies. The script is intelligent and aware, direction is sharp, and acting is superb. And it shows that the corruption in Congress started a long time ago.
James Stewart is of course fantastic, but Jean Arthur--she was amazing! If anyone is interested in her other movies, Talk of the Town with Cary Grant and Ronald Colman and The More the Merrier with Joel McCrea are highly recommended.
