Does spending "long journeys" at jail behind bars actually help deter crime? I figure out most of you live in the US where long term prison sentences are nothing but routine as most of the countries seem to have a sort of life imprisonment sentence, but only for the most severe cases.
So what do you think about life sentence? is really useful to stop criminals or at least to drive them to think twice before committing crimes? I see at least it prevents convicts to keep on committing more crimes.
It'll obviously prevent that specific person from committing more crimes in society at large. I'm not sure it actually works as a deterrent, though. And the US prison system is way too focused on punishment over rehabilitation to be useful, anyway.
Prison is not set up to help offenders. People forget these guys will be your neighbors one day. I like good neighbors, not angry, uneducated and hostile ones.

Surely if they'll be your neighbors one day, you want them to be helped?

Criminals don't figure they're going to get caught. That may be a rational conclusion...I personally don't know how often they get away with crime (or see others get away with crime) to know if they aren't quite accurate at estimating the odds. Heck, maybe in practice the chances of actually being punished for any particular criminal act is no better than winning the lottery.
Apparently a lot of them aren't daunted by the prospect of prison anyway.

The laws in most states, if I'm not mistaken, require them to return to the areas from whence they were taken. That doesn't seem to make very much sense to me, however.

Yes it does because for those periods of time that they are behind bars they're not out in society committing crimes but that's about it. So it will stop, let's say a serial rapist or killer. For less serious crimes I don't think it does much.

Of course this depends on what sort of crime a person was convicted of. But if someone is not released in the area they were probably living in, where should the be released? One would assume they could have family or friends there. Putting them somewhere they have never been before would not do any good.
