It just means either you were unlucky or there was something that made your return more likely to be audited like high deductions, business income, rental losses etc...

Also Why was it terrifying?
Why should high earners be audited anyway? Why does it matter? Why should they be punished for their hard work by being under scrutiny by an agency that has the power to put someone in jail?

Why was it terrifying? How old are you?

Trump's proposal doubled the standard deduction, eliminating the need for most average Americans to itemize deductions.

Trump also proposed eliminating the Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT) and deductions except for mortgage interest and charitable donations. The AMT was retained, but with changes towards simplification.

In this regard, the Tax Cut and Jobs Act was a small step towards the simplification of the tax code. More than any president in recent memory has done. But decades of convoluted tax code are not going to be unraveled in one or two terms.

Flat income tax, no deductions and a VAT. Everyone treated fairly and less need for bureaucracy.

I was a high earner some years back.

Got audited.
It changed nothing.

The underlying message around here is that high earners are cheating somehow.
That's nonsense.

Perhaps for higher level dealers. I think that most of the gun deals are small enough to be cash.

Going to be a whole bunch of young guys playing around in crypto that end up in leavenworth eventually for tax evasion.

Typical lib response.

Expanding the IRS means more audits for EVERYONE, the middle class included.

The targets of the IRS are anyone who works for a living, not federal dependents.

The IRS will increasingly be used as a political weapon to punish conservatives, just like Obama did.

I barely make 50k. I am not rich and I pay in. I want a flat tax or a federal sales tax and cut out income taxes. So spare me that only the rich will be paying. You are lying and you don't know what grows an economy.

So what we have is a proposal to collect from the top x% that have been getting away without paying their fair share (like some elected officials that we have known) and this is bad why?
Typical Democrat. Don't create jobs in the private sector but more jobs for the government and go after people's earned income. Is not enough they already collect more than enough so they spend it and give it for free in other areas but they want more. LOL.

Democrats don't understand that the more earned income you make, the more it moves in the economy and more revenue the government makes. If I keep 50k more a year, I spend that money in the economy by buying or expanding my business. The more it moves the more revenues the government collects each time it moves hands.
