I was raised a Catholic and was devout for many decades, then in my fifties I became Orthodox, which is like Roman Catholic on steroids. It has nothing to do with this topic but I feel I should disclose that here.
I am pro-life, always was and always will be. Abortion is murder.
Roe vs Wade somehow became the law of the land, and our public servants need to be cognizant of that. The law is the law and we can not let the exercise of our religion interfere with how we conduct ourselves in public office. If abortion is legal there isn't a damn thing we can do about it as functionaries of the government. We follow the law.
So this is a dilemma for any Catholic, or Orthodox Christian, in government.
It is also inappropriate for any church to try to impose it's morality on the nation, or coerce the government. That's politics, and churches have no place in that, just as government has no place meddling in religion.
Churches should put their efforts into teaching the people, so that they will not want to go out and seek abortions. Making it illegal doesn't deter the practice, it just makes it more dangerous. Churches can't off-load their responsibility on the government, if churches expect the government to do their job they are capitulating their role in society. It won't work, simply making abortions illegal will not solve the problem.
Legal or not, there will continue to be millions of abortions until the people just don't want to do that anymore. And given the very low credibility of churches today (nearly all of them) I don't expect the churches to be very successful convincing the mass of people to stop aborting their children. They have shot their wads.
Anyone who wants to learn more about traditional Christian moral values, especially from a Catholic perspective, should read '
Catholic Social Teaching', I have the bound volume but it is
available online. Studying that one learns that neither of the major parties represent Christian values very well, but surprising to some the Democrats get it right more often than the Republicans.
