...Iran is the most civilized and industrious country in Western Asia. It has been that way for thousands of years as the heart of the Persian empire.
Instead of having Iran as an enemy, the U.S. could've had them as an ally. The 'Islamic Regime' in Iran, truly an invading force, would've crumbled so fast had the U.S. stopped the hostility/sanctioning. Our aggressive actions towards them are what precisely kept the foreign regime alive for so long. The people of Iran actually love the U.S., and we could've killed the regime "with kindness". It's one of the few countries where that tactic would've actually worked but our braindead politicians like Taliban Joe don't understand that.
We could have had an ally government in Iran, and I'm not talking about a second coming of the Pahlavi dynasty. But we squandered it for love with the Wahhabis in Saudi Arabia, the same buffoons that infected the rest of the Middle East with their fundamentalist ideology.
Friends and Allies with Iran? I don't think so. Obama and Kerry tried that with the nuke deal and the plane load of money. They gave Iran everything they wanted and what did we get in return? The people in the streets were still shouting Death to America.
The only thing that we might have been able to do is to help raise the average Iranian persons level of living by buying their oil and minerals. The use of force was never going to work because they have been fighting for hundreds of years and that is their first response to opposition.

Nah, Obama never lifted any sanctions -- he was a hypocrite. The people of Iran continued to suffer the effect of sanctions even after the nuke deal. Trump was right to get rid of it.
BTW, only a small proportion of regime loyalists shout "Death to America". Your typical Iranian loves the U.S.
Iran should not have taken any hostages back in the 70’s if they wanted to be treated properly.
It appears that the Taliban understands this. They could easily take a bunch of hostages right now but looks like they won’t.
Admittedly, my post will look pretty stupid if they change course and decide to do what the Iranians did.
But looking ahead, due to hardline Sunnis taking over in AFG, the US might have to work more with the Iranians in the future. Which is disgusting, because the Iranians are also the number one state sponsor of terrorism in the world, and it’s not even close.
