That 60% includes Trump and many other very wealthy households that lave more strategies available to them to avoid taxes, than other earners.

The tax code favors very high and low income earners.

61% of U.S. households paid no federal income tax last year

The majority of U.S. households paid no federal income taxes in 2020, a spike driven by the pandemic-induced economic downturn and multiple rounds of tax-based assistance. The trend is likely to continue in 2021.

Nearly 107 million households — or 61% of U.S. households — owed no federal income taxes in 2020, according to estimates by The Tax Policy Center, marking a 40% increase from 2019 when 43.6% of households didn’t pay taxes..
Did you read the link posted beyond the headline? Instead of reading Yahoo, why not go to the source, the Tax Policy center that leans center left? Here it is:

https://www.taxpolicycenter.org/taxv...ral-income-tax

It attributes the temporary situation to the 20 million, mostly low wage earners , who lost their jobs in 2020 due to reactions to Covid the Stimulus Payments that were designed as refundable tax credits, Child Tax Credit, Earned Income Tax Credit and Child Care Tax Credit.

I favor a flat tax on all gross income. No deductions. No credits. Unfortunately no Congress majority , regardless of party, agrees.

Congress prefers to financially reward people for child- bearing and mortgage debt. It also favors certain sources of income over others.

Pretty sure that means big time wealth redistribution.

That’s been true throughout history.

There are thousands of micro economies in the US which means a wage buys more or less depending on where you live.

The average price for a new car crossed the $40,000 mark in 2020. Lots of bells and whistles that have nothing to do with government. Suddenly, we have lost the ability to close our trunks, stay in our lane, back up or observe the traffic ahead has stopped or is moving, no different than how we collectively lost the utility to roll our car windows up/ down, decades ago.

Most households have multiple smart phones. Despite the “cut the cord” thing, 79 million households. have not done so.

We dine out and travel more than at any time in history. 2020 was an exception.

Like the federal government most households carry debt, mortgage, auto loans, student loans and of course consumer debt at insane interest rates. We want what we want when we want it and then blame through if/ when we choke on it.

Lots of billionaires don't pay much in federal income tax. I don't think the working or non-working poor are the problem.
No different than Trump. And it’s legal. The tax code favors very high and low income earners.

A flat tax on all gross income, no deductions, no credits, no carryovers, is the fairest approach to fund a government.
