If it's not your device, there is no reasonable expecation of privacy. Kids probably don't understand this, but parents certainly should.
It's not the student's it's the taxpayers. As a taxpayer in a school district that does that it is my device as well and did or would not give permission for software like that. There are disclosure issues as well-was it in the paperwork the student and/or parent signed for the computer. Was this made clear and not just fine print in a reciept.

The school gave these out. They are not looking for perverts, they are totally down with all that. The trannier the better.
They are hunting for the most elusive of all exotic creatures....The dreaded White American Male racist -- future members of the dwindling patriarchy who have kept this most liberal of all nations safe for freaks and miscreants since 1776.
Unfortunately for them (and us) all the young white males are over on World Star Hip Hop wishing their lives more closely resembled the chaos of the Gov't-approved-Kool-Kids in the ghetto.
Just reason #12638903466882 why govt schools are the devil.
In other (and better) news:in the age of abusive covid measures, private school enrollment and homeschooling are both on the uptick.
And just think how those numbers would increase and the positive changes in education there would be if people werent taxed to death to pay for the states failed system?

No, it's not "the taxpayers'" any more than we own the F-35s or national parks that our tax dollars pay for.
Was it made clear? Is there a requirement for it to be made clear or is this a question of "should" rather than "have to"?
I bought my kids their own devices and I still don't like it.
I don't like it either but they are property of someone else that someone else does have a right to track their equipment.
I've worked in poor schools. When laptops first got distributed we had "disappearances" and had to give the student a new laptop. Then parents had to sign that they were responsible for them. There were still "disappearances" but now parents showed up with a police report..parent said the laptop got stolen.
So you tell me what should be done.
"Where's my laptop" software installed especially in schools is probably the result of high equipment loss.
My ISD started giving laptops to all students 12 years ago. At that time there was a $250 deposit per laptop. There were some complaints from parents with 4-5 kids.
How is a teacher not supposed to see and hear what goes on in a house when using zoom for teaching?
