"My prediction is that nothing is going to change and the shipping crisis is only going to get worse. Nobody in the supply chain wants to pay to solve the problem. They literally just won’t pay to solve the problem. At the point we are at now, things are so backed up that the backups THEMSELVES are causing container companies, ports, warehouses, and trucking companies to charge massive rate increases for doing literally NOTHING.
I hear ya.
The problem can be solved by people who are actually in the shipping/supply business. Any "government action" will result in perhaps higher prices, but no real solutions.
The government, for example, wanted to license 18 year olds to drive trucks. It is the government who took charge of your Hours of Service rules, and the emission standards that keep trucks sidelined for parts like a DEF detector.
The truckers - in the form of the business owners and executives - need to have direct input into Federal Motorcarrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). The FMCSA has ruined the industry.
It's all under the DOT and that means Pete Buttigieg. Buttigieg is entirely unqualified to head Department of Transportation, whose mission is "to develop and coordinate policies that will provide an efficient and economical national transportation system, with due regard for need, the environment, and the national defense".
And Pete ain't doing it.

Understanding that DOT is Pete and that's the subject at hand, these positions are almost always staffed for 'political' reasons. Qualification has nothing to do with it. In fact, I think an argument can be made that they really don't WANT someone to be too qualified... because those folks might actually try to fix things that are broken.
I blame "Just in time' deliveries. They ain't in time for anything anymore. Not the truckers fault which is due to the pandemic.
Yep. It may help holding costs but it doesn't help when there is times of shortages. Look at the chip shortages. This could have been delayed had companies not wanted to have just in time inventory. I have to wonder if the current shortages have companies looking to change their ways.

I agree, and I think it's largely a problem that was touched on in this article. Declining union membership is the issue. We saw a lot of prosperity in the country with higher union membership. Once that control goes back to owners, and away from unions/etc., we see more and more problems come up. If more people in all parts of the supply chain were unionized, there'd be a structure to push for more than just maximizing profitability (which is NOT the same thing as maximizing the supply chain).
