The bulk of cases were before May 2020 because that's how long it took China to finish their lockdown. Outside of temporary responses to local outbreaks, China has been open and largely COVID-free since then.

Viruses usually proliferate in cold dry weather. It in the mid 80s during the day in South Africa right now.

So the variant is mild and the weather is mild.

That was one scientist, not scientists. Indications are that it is more infectious but not more deadly. It spread through South Africa rapidly.
