It's called an assault rifle or machine gun because it is made to look like one. That's all pretty simple stuff here. It's gets it's reputation from being the first choice of most idiots making the news or the douchebag on YouTube openly carrying near schools or whatever.
If it isn't a military gun why are so many people walking around in combat fatigues with it? It is judged based on appearance but that also drives it's popularity. It's the perfect wannabe Rambo gun. The real question is who is the dumb one? The liberal that doesn't know the difference between guns or the guy out o he corner brandishing one of these things to exercise his 2A rights when there is no need to.
As the saying goes guns don't kill people do, it can be said the AR15 isn't a problem it's the platoon of goons that own them that is the problem.
Plenty of people also wear fatigues while carrying paintball guns. That does not mean that paintball guns are assault rifles.
And no, AR 15s are not machine guns in anyway shape or form. Just no.

Neither are M16s, M14s, Uzis, Thompson .30 cals (Tommy guns), etc. At least not according to our (and most other nations) military.
The M60 is an example of a "machine gun" or "heavy machine gun." Typically, drum, box or belt fed ammunition of at least 100 round capacity is a requirement for "machine gun."

Judge much ? Other than the asshats you've mentioned, millions of other AR owners either shoot paper targets or hunt with them. They are cheap, simple to shoot and one doesn't need to be a gunsmith to assemble one.
If they were to cost as much as a custom 1911 , I'm sure you wouldn't be seeing too may of them. That is probably why AK47's aren't as popular as they once where, the cost have risen on them, and the AR platform is cheaper and better, allegedly.

They are semi-automatic. You can alter it to be fully automatic. Is it. Machine gun at that point? Would you admit that to the average person the AR looks exactly like a machine gun? I get it, there are loads of gun dorks out there that this is a hobby for. However don't expect people that don't share your enthusiasm to adhere to your personal gun geek nomenclature.
You walk around with a gun that is for most purposes an exact replica of a military grade machine gun what do you expect? It's the closest thing to that as is legally allowed to own. It's a machine gun replica or copy.
I am a Tech geek it used to make me outraged when somebody would call an iPod touch an iTouch. I mean really really mad. Then I got over it.

Even if something can be altered, it is not something it is not before it is altered. So no, an AR 15 is not a machine gun. You can keep saying it is one all day wrong but that doesnt make it one, it just makes you incorrect.
It is not "personal gun geek nomenclature", whatever that is. It is facts. Once again, just because you are ignorant of something does not change what something is. For instance, just because a person doesnt know the difference between a manual transmission and an automatic transmission does mean that they are the something.

This a weird argument.
you are basically saying you dont like a made up term because it has a negative view, which is fine. But the problem is the OP simply argues putting a modifier on that made up term, and thats laughable.
