They simply couldn't think of themselves as "no different than any other American" for obvious reasons.
Then why did they take every opportunity to prove that they were just like any other American. Every time this country went to war black men tried desperately to join the ranks only to be denied. Being a slave didn't make a person feel any different from his master. If you read writings of slaves and ex-slaves you can see clearly how they felt about them selves. You can blame Christianity for that. Whether a person is being discriminated against ; racially, sexually, age, religion or for a physical handicap, they know they are no different than any other American.

Affirmative action is a great way to prove they are inferior.
Lack of infrastructure, disease, corruption, and conflict are the top reasons. Africa has the resources to be very wealthy but there's a myriad of things holding it back.

Because it hurts to feel as an outcast, it hurts to live in poverty, it hurts to feel constantly suppressed ( whether it's justified somehow or not is a different question.)

And for giving them a life that the vast majority of the Africans can only dream of, now and then.

Incorrect. It’s the people themselves - they are the problem.
If you think a bunch of people only a few years removed from the Stone Age know how to run a country, you are out of your mind.

Africa was far more prosperous under European leadership than under its own independence. But they wanted to run their own countries, and are still blaming Europe for how it drew Africa's borders.
African countries could've been Dubai and Qatar, but sadly we won't see that.
If Africa had been inhabited primarily by white people, it would look like America, Europe, and Australia today. Modern and developed.
Eastern Europe is far from modern.
If Africa had remained under Western European leadership, Africa would be modern and developed today. You need powerful militaries and weapons to get these chaotic countries under control, and that's what the west had.
