That was my question too. Why would you support the Russian dialect when Russia is the aggressor. In what world would the Russian version of a Ukrainian territory trump the Ukrainians.
It's because some people support the aggressor. This is why some people get angry when they hear "Kiyiv". Why do some people support the aggressor? Out of spite towards those who don't.
Before yesterday, I had never ever seen the name of Ukraine's capital city spelled in any way other than Kiev. So I had absolutely no idea that they spelled it any differently. Given my disdain for our contemporary media, I too thought that it was something they were trying to pull.

Honestly, I don't know why we don't refer to cities and countries according to how the inhabitants refer to them. If Germans call the city Muenchen and their country Deutschland, why don't we? If Italians refer to Florence as Firenze, why don't we? Technically, we should pronounce the capital of France as Pairee, though at least we spell it the same way they do.
Why so mad? Because someone else learned a new word?
Language evolves. Usage evolves. Pronunciation and spelling evolve. How many people in modern US use armoire now instead of wardrobe or chifforobe? Do you still say Peking instead of Beijing?
Language doesn't "evolve" in a matter of thirty-six hours as words suddenly pop up in the media.
Do you really want to call that language evolution? Or should we call it a pimply-faced newscast script writer discovering some archaic or little-used word that he or she thinks sounds cool, and then every other newscaster thinking it sounds cool as well. Soon it becomes a Valley Girl "like" situation. And then a couple of months later, the cool crowd decides it is trite. And it disappears. I'd call it more a language de-evolution (at least for the couple of months that the word is in "cool mode").
I have noticed that the capital city in the Ukraine has been referred to Kyiv and pronounced Keeve lately on the news. Apparently its the way Ukraine calls it. And Kiev was how Russia called the city.
So which do you prefer? And what will it be called once Russia takes control?
City was, according to a legend, founded by brothers - Kyi, Shcheck and Horyv and their sister Lybid (Swan). Hence, the city was named Kyi Grad, or Kyi City. Later, it became Kyiv, belonging to Kyi. Like my city, Lviv, was name after Duke Lev ( Lion) - city of Lev, Lion.
In Russian transliteration, Kyiv was spelled as Kiev.
That’s it.
Are you proud of pronouncing "burrito" wrong? And because you do, does that make you ignorant?
Not really. And that's not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about people who are getting angry over the use of the word "Kiyiv". My theory is that ignorance is viewed as a good thing.
