All this Kiev silliness reminds me of how Obama thought he was better than everyone else by pronouncing Pakistan as “Pock-kee-stahn."

I remember when D.R. Congo was called Zaire. I call it the D.R. Congo. I think about things in terms of geography and history. One of the reasons I don't see a reason to get mad over the name "Kiyiv". I've known it's been called "Kiyiv" by Ukrainians since the late 1990s. I think more people need to really have an in-depth study of geography and history, big time.

During Soviet days, the capital of the Moldavian S.S.R. was Kishinev. Since 1991, Moldavian S.S.R. is Moldova, and its national capital is Chisinau. Moldova is a Romanian-speaking nation, for that reason, Kishinev was changed to Chisinau.

Moscow in Russian is called Moskva.

Bucharest, the capital of Romania. In Romanian, its name is Bucuresti.

Poland's capital, Warsaw, is called Warszawa in Polish.

The capital of the Czech Republic (Czechia) is Prague. It Czech 'it's known as Praha. In fact, there is a town in Texas called Praha, which was settled by Czech immigrants.

Hearing people complain about the use of the name "Kiyiv" is not only annoying, it just tells me some people are spiteful.

Why so mad? Because someone else learned a new word?

Language evolves. Usage evolves. Pronunciation and spelling evolve. How many people in modern US use armoire now instead of wardrobe or chifforobe? Do you still say Peking instead of Beijing?

Thank you. You actually get it. And being someone who is big into history and geography, I have every reason to understand that this isn't a media stunt. All I see from some people is just anger and spitefulness.

Then it will really drive you nuts when more countries will start being referred to the same way their inhabitants refer to them - and no other way.

Deutschland.
Suomi.
Bharat.
Sakartvelo.
Hayastan.

...for a handful of examples.

Not only do language and usage evolve, so do countries. Moldova used to be part of the Soviet Union as the Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic. Today, it's been Moldova for the past 30+ years. It's capital, Chisinau, used to be called Kishinev, a reflection of once being ruled by Russia. Chisinau reflects the Romanian heritage (and Romanian language) of Moldova.

I would not only say parochial ignorance. I would also call it proud ignorance. It's almost like some people are proud of being ignorant.
