Russia didn't go to Ukraine because he got along well with its president.
You are correct. Putin is upset that the president of Ukraine, and most Ukrainians (62%), want to join NATO (since 2014). And the EU. This upsets Putin. In fact, he's paranoid about it. He's paranoid that eventually Ukraine would join NATO, and the EU. So he decided to attack Ukraine with the goal to replace it's pro West government with a pro-Russian government.
Ukraine has been independent for 30 years since the Soviet Union broke up. Ukraine has it's own language and politics which about 30% consider themselves Russian.
If the Soviet Empire was so good how come it could not provide a decent economy for it's people? Why try to form that failed system again?
If you speculate in an area that has high crime, you need to take into account, you may get robbed. And that includes knife point, or gun point, so its important to have the safeguards.
Oh, so Ukraine made took the provocative gamble of locating right next door to Russia when it it should have chosen to locate, where, next to Portugal or something?
How do grown adults come up with such idiot rationales for one nation flat-out invading another with zero provocation?

I wish that is what Ukraine really wants.
In reality, a slight majority in Western Ukraine wants to while Eastern and Southern Ukraine wants nothing to do with the EU, or wants to join Russia. After the 2014 coup, the western majority that seized power in the capital has used the Ukrainian Army to try to put down the secession/rebellion in the East and South through force.
The Western coup was supported by America and the EU, who gave money to literal Ukrainian Nazis, who brought down the democratically-elected government, but who were then stabbed in the back after they were successful, and now these Ukrainian Nazis are fighting for a literal Jewish government, which seems hell-bent on getting every Ukrainian killed because they are getting paid off by the United States and the EU to make Russia pay as high a price as possible as part of a larger geopolitical game.

Same reason Ukraine doesn't want the fighting to stop now. They want the world's attention and sympathy. Play the victim. Get weapons, get aid. This is just a TV show to them.
