Given that America has no side in this conflict other than keeping a pro-American puppet in charge of the money laundering operations in Kiyv, who cares what this American citizen chooses to do with his life?
We have Americans join al Qaeda. We have Americans running around college campuses wearing Che Guevara shirts. About 15 years ago, I sat in a university dean's office for a job interview and on the wall behind his desk, he had an 8 foot tall poster of VI Lenin and all glory to the October Revolution. We had American celebrities praising the socialist dictator of Venezuela as he destroyed that nation.
Etc etc etc.
Americans are free to be as foolish with their lives and free time as they like. It's one of our best and worst features as a nation.
Well, there were some Americans that fought on the side of the Nazis in WW2. There's always a few lone wolf types that sympathize with the enemy.
Who is our enemy in this case? I consider neither Russia nor Ukraine to be my enemy. If Americans want to volunteer to fight for either side it's no skin off my teeth.

Americans are free to do what they like but there are consequences for their actions if they act contrary to federal law even outside of the U.S. At the very least Bentley has violated 18 USC 960 and 956 Conspiracy to kill, maim, injure people and to damage property in a foreign country.
Here are some examples of what can result when American choose to support or join terrorists or enemy combatants overseas.
One of the best examples is the American Taliban John Walker Lindh. In July 2002 Lindh's lawyers reached a plea bargain with federal prosecutors. Lindh agreed to plead guilty to charges of supplying services to the Taliban in violation of U.S. sanctions and carrying weapons while committing a crime
