I think they should hurry up the process, both countries are in Putin's cross hairs cause he's not going to stop with the Ukraine. Hopefully Switzerland warms up to joining NATO too. Strength in numbers.
QUOTE: Russia's invasion of Ukraine has profoundly changed Europe’s security outlook, including for Nordic neutrals Finland and Sweden, where support for joining NATO has surged to record levels.
Well, I hope in joining NATO they are not expecting any sort of protection from the US. I seriously doubt any would be coming under any circumstance at that point, other than if there were a direct attack on US soil. We're a joke. Biden Inc is a joke. Goat herders told us to get out and not let the door hit our butts as we leave. And even at that, the door hit our butts very hard. And we left half our military equipment behind--military equipment that our tax dollars paid for.
Putin can be like a kid in a candy store at this point. He can take any candy he likes and has the manpower to take. Any resistance is going to have to come from Europe itself as Putin heightens his aspirations. The Ukrainians are doing better than expected at this point. But for how long?
Oh sure, we could open the silos and send the nukes. But then he'll do the same thing. The good news is that our soldiers and high command will address you by your preferred pronoun--that important training has been taken care of.
the problem is the swelling of NATO since 1999.... when the Iron curtain dropped in the early 90's, we and the other members of NATO AGREED to Russia that NATO would not increase
since then we and NATO have gone back our our word
1999...Poland, Hungary , and Czechia
2004...Slovenia, Slovakia, Romania, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, and Bulgaria
2009...Croatia and Albania
2017..Montenegro
2020 North Macedonia

Just reading that article I almost burst laughing at the hypocrisy of Putin claiming that NATO took advantage of Russian weakness following the USSR's collapse. Vladimir Putin, oligarch and his other oligarch friends, complaining of someone taking advantage of Russian weaknesses.
Where did you and your cronies get their billions Vlad?
On January 31, 1990, West German Foreign Minister Hans-Dietrich Genscher declared, “What NATO must do is state unequivocally that whatever happens in the Warsaw Pact, there will be no expansion of NATO territory eastwards, that is to say, closer to the borders of the Soviet Union.”
in February 1990, U.S. Secretary of State James Baker and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev discussed NATO’s future role in a unified Germany. Baker told Gorbachev that “there would be no extension of NATO’s jurisdiction for forces of NATO one inch to the east” and agreed with Gorbachev’s statement that “Any extension of the zone of NATO is unacceptable.”
October 1993. U.S. Secretary of State Warren Christopher had traveled to Moscow to explain in advance of the January 1994 NATO summit that the United States would not support new members joining the alliance.
It had been less than a year since Yeltsin was told “Partnership for all, not NATO for some.” He made clear his displeasure at a December 1994 meeting in Budapest of the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe (CSCE), which was being upgraded to the Organization on Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), a pan-European security framework. Yeltsin shocked his American and European colleagues by stating, “Europe, even before it has managed to shrug off the legacy of the Cold War, is risking encumbering itself with a cold peace.” He continued:
NATO was created in Cold War times. Today, it is trying to find its place in Europe, not without difficulty. It is important that this search not create new divisions, but promote European unity. We believe that the plans of expanding NATO are contrary to this logic. Why sow the seeds of distrust? After all, we are no longer
adversaries, we are partners.
But for many Russians, most importantly Vladimir Putin, the 1990s were a decade of humiliation, as the United States imposed its vision of order on Europe (including in Kosovo in 1999) while the Russians could do nothing but stand by and watch. In 2008 in Georgia and in 2014 in Ukraine, Putin made clear there were red lines he would not allow NATO and the European Union to cross.
The most important moral of the story is that neither the United States and the Europeans nor Russia found an acceptable role for the latter in European security after the Cold War. Partnership for Peace proved short-lived as a possible solution.
They can take our place. We have no business being in NATO or any other entangling alliance.
NATO makes us stronger. An America without allies leave a power vacuum for Russia and China. We can't stop China's authoritarian advances without forging alliances.
I have no problems with Finland and Sweden joining. But they are wealthy nations.
Let them pay for it fully. We are broke and 30T in debt
