Because that's their cultural expectation. If they're attacked by a foreign country, healthy men fight, and protect the women and children and elderly.

No, it's a narrative they want to keep on promoting - the "racial reckoning" narrative of the past 2 years since George Floyd. Ukrainians cannot be allowed to replace POC as victims, not even while their country is being destroyed.
The countries taking in the refugees from Ukraine know perfectly what it means to live under the hammer of Russia because they spent 40 plus years living under the axe of the Soviets, which are quite different, like James or Jim, Marie or Mary.
These countries have similar religions, customs, values, foods, history and they often speak the language of their neighbors.
In simple terms, if our next door neighbor gets flooded we'll invite her in, but I wouldn't make the same offer to a farmer from Yemen or a carpenter from Afghanistan. Yeah, I know, another racist bastard here on CD.
Maybe those countries just paid attention that when bringing in people from countries like Syria with strict religious views, 16th century views toward women as well as language barriers a number of countries have had a lot of resulting problems. (Also a lot of racist views themselves)
The NYT and NBC just like to stir racial pots imo and we have some virtue signallers already falling into line.
The same virtue signallers that would be upset if 30,000 religious fundamentalists moved to their town as refugees
