The OP's post headline is silly. GOP is not afraid of the debates, they are sick and tired of debating both the dems and the moderators selected by this supposedly nonpartisan.
If the GOP’s candidate didn’t insist on lying about basic facts and breaking the debate rules, they’d have nothing to worry about with the moderators. But since they can’t, or won’t, maintain decorum, they’re choosing to take their ball and go home. Either way is fine with me.
If the GOP does refuse debates, I hope they bring in the Libertarian candidate to debate the Democrat. That might give some moderate Republicans and Independents another candidate to consider.
The moderators “are biased”? Well, the GOP approved them before the debates, didn’t they?
But that’s not a big deal. Looking back at debates from the last 20 years, I don’t think they changed much. The media has a party. They are all hyper, but after the dust settles, each side thinks their candidate won. “Reaching voters” is more of a myth.

Weren't "moderators" caught in giving the questions to Democrat candidates before the debate?
Like Democrats tell the truth in debates. So much truth from the Democrat's mouths
The only candidates NOT to consider are in the Democrat party.
Jesus, the moderators in the debates with Trump were literally debating him, too. They never followed up on any tough questions on Biden. It was clear they were biased.
The real issue is that they think the moderators are biased towards liberals. The moderators last time around seemed to push back on the lies that the GOP candidate would try to push, and that got their panties in a whirl. I don't think they are saying they will not do ANY debates, just not debates sponsored by the Commission. It's their way of trying to get home field advantage. While I think it is a little chickenchit myself, I can also understand and respect their reasoning. It's nothing more than a strategic move to gain more power over the debate format.
Thank you - but aren't panties supposed to be in a "twist," not a whirl?

Most moderators have come from news outlets that have traditionally been considered moderate/cntrist (at least before recent years when the GOP thinks every place except Fox is liberal). Can you give any examples?
You have not seen, for instance, Rachel Maddow moderating. I don't find that moderator "push back" except to occasionally try to keep the reply on-topic or, rarely, counter outright lies.
Well if you ask a GOP candidate was the election stolen you will see why they want to avoid any type of debate. You either lie and accept the wrath of the red hat brigade. It's a no win situation.

What is this "wrath of the red hat brigade" that you speak of?
