There have been multiple ‘red scares’ & hysteria in the United States. Nearly or all have coincided with civil rights movements. The most well known is likely the one culminating in the Army-McCarthy hearings. (where McCarthy was asked “Have you no decency?” & was left speechless)

Martin Luther King Jr. was labeled a communist, jailed, as was W.E.B. Du Bois & others.

As best I recall MLK was not jailed for any communist associations.

What your words miss is when we've had protracted civil rights disturbances since the late 1920s the Soviets and later the Russians have been involved.

I'm no fan of McCarthy but regarding the, "have you no decency" line. Fred Fischer had been a member, apparently for years, of a communist front group at Harvard Law.
