"Cmdr. Arlo Abrahamson, a spokesman for Naval Surface Force Pacific...confirmed that the nine ships the Navy hopes to decommission include all the Freedom LCSs currently commissioned in the Navy: Fort Worth (LCS-3), Milwaukee (LCS-5), Detroit (LCS-7), Little Rock (LCS-9), Sioux City (LCS-11), Wichita (LCS-13), Billings (LCS-15), Indianapolis (LCS-17) and St. Louis (LCS-19)

Rear Adm. John Gumbleton, the deputy assistant secretary of the Navy for budget...acknowledged the Navy spent quite a bit of money buying these ships — about $4.5 billion on the nine hulls alone."

The oldest of these (LCS 3) was commisioned in September 2012, so isn't quite ten years old, and the newest (LCS 19) isn't yet two years old - she was commissioned in August 2020.

I guess the days of having Navy ships around for 30+ years is over - but I'd expect more than 2 years out of them...maybe they should think about leasing instead : )

The level of corruption in the military is beyond staggering. These people are the worst. Sell themselves out to the devil.

The littoral combat ships are a failure of planning and design. The navy spend a fortune designing these overpriced expensive "nearshore (littoral) ships" because they thought that the primary job of the navy was going to fight terrorists and weaker rogue nations. In another words, the USA as World Policeman. Meanwhile China is building a navy that is larger then the USA Navy.

For years, the US Navy neglected designing traditional new frigate, destroyer and cruiser classes. Hopefully that is changing, starting with the new Constellation class frigates.

What do they care? It didn't cost those making these decisions one dime. All funding comes from the bottomless pockets of the American taxpayer. Spend away like a drunken sailor!

Well........................its an evolution in thought for the navy. The objective was to make smaller ships, which is not a bad idea. An aircraft carriet and a cruiser are just big targets anymore.

The conclusion they need to arrive it is NAVAL DRONES to make surface ships obsolete. The only man made ships should be submarines. With multiple drones, you can make any sea lane impassable to ships with minimal cost and sink ANYTHING.

The effectiveness of nautical drones (underwater) would be far, far more effective than surface ships at a fraction of the cost. Think of them as mobile nautical mines that can be directed to and sink any surface vessel. As they can be very small, they are hard to detect and with numbers impossible to defend against.

From when these things first started being built I have argued against them. The US Navy is good in the deep blue. It serves no purpose to have vessels designed for shallow shoal waters.

Maybe the US Coast Guard would want them, their mission is more about guarding the shoals.

Washington DC is a far bigger waste of taxpayer dollars than some ships that can be repurposed.

$4.5B is a rounding error compared to the amount of money dems want to set fire to.
