We have a former president who is actively trying to increase censorship and shut down free expression in the digital public square. We warned you!
someone needs to press bammers on his definition of the bolded:

“While content moderation can limit the distribution of clearly dangerous content, it doesn’t go far enough,” Obama added.

you should take that message to the millions of leftists with their panties in a twist at the possibility of elon musk buying twatter and making it more free-speech friendly. they're in hysterics over the very thought.

Barack Obama Calls for More Censorship: First Amendment ‘Does Not Apply to Facebook and Twitter’

If Facebook and Twitter get paid from the government, then they are government contractors.

For COVID, it was fine to subject government contractors to federal rules.

Now for Big Tech, they are private companies, not subject to federal rules.

They want to play on both sides of the private/public fence.

I agree and disagree with Barry.

I agree that the 1st Amendment is an explicit reminder that GOVERNMENT cannot mess with the right to free speech. As in, they cannot jail you for speaking ill against them (read the Federalist Papers). But the freedom of speech does guarantee you a platform, podium and loudspeaker setup for that speech. Just means the government cannot take away your ability to speak.

Facebook and Twitter are platforms/podiums/loudspeakers that are privately owned and have private rules for their voluntary associations. Those rules are available for anyone to read in the respective terms of service. No secret how they roll.

Where I disagree is with the notion that speech/thought should be censored, but that is a general disagreement on censorship, which is second only to infidelity on my scale of human behaviors I find most vile and repugnant. People shutting off their ears and eyes to that which challenges, irritates or even offends is how you devolve the human species. Doing so is dumb. But other people shutting it off preemptively so you never get a chance to hear or see things...that is anathema. F**k censorship.

Additional point - if Elon Musk was smart, instead of overpaying for Twitter, he should simply bankroll a behemoth competitor for 1/10th of Twitter's current value, crush Twitter under that new company's bootheel, and then multiply his initial investment by 5-10x easily. When he gets that done, go crush Facebook the exact same way. Don't try to infiltrate and flip the enemy, just build a bigger army, crush the enemy and then take over the land they vacated.

If Obama would have been President in 1980 would he want AT&T to cut the phone lines of conservatives? How can Democrats be so stupid to listen to this jumped up fool?

That would be interesting to see.
Maybe just change that American rule that allows anybody to say anything they want about a public figure. A couple multi million dollar lawsuits for Libel or slander could make us all think twice before opening our mouths.

Pllain old citizens like Jewell and Sandmann can sue media and win.

I think politicians should also be able to sue.

Anybody working for AT&T could listen to any phone line they needed to.

They just could never repeat what they heard.

I don't like Obama but the right has continually misrepresented the first amendment. Clearly it was designed to keep government in check and that is it.

Anything you sign up for online has a TOS. You violate the TOS you get the boot. Pretty simple.

Why would social media be any different?

This is all about pushing morality imo, that is pretty obvious is what they are attempting. Social media is the last hold out, its long overdue for the govt to reign them in and start censoring.
Nice attempt but totally invalid comparison.

Obama is not talking about not allowing curse words or banning what would be considered "soft" or even "hardcore" porn. Some things out there on Social Media would make Hugh Heffner blush. He is talking about censoring IDEAS. Ideas that go against the agenda of the left.

The FCC isn't "censoring" political thoughts or opinions that go against the liberal agenda, you can thank the networks themselves for that. Not that they haven't tried but if they were successful I am sure that you would have every liberal convinced that Fox News would be off the air.

Now, if the various Social Media companies as a "company" decision decide to censor things that of course is their choice. But they need to be doing that WITHOUT government influence. Of course, it is very obvious that the government is very much attempting to influence their decisions.

It is fascinating how Obama constantly attacks conservative media, but has only good things to say about liberal media.

His latest comments are a jab at Elon Musk for trying to bring some balance to the content of Twitter. That is what this is really about.

The left has found a loophole in our constitutional right to free speech that allows them to use it as a tool for violating the spirit, intent and moral philosophy behind the concept of free speech. And they certainly are pleased with themselves over it. Nothing more satisfying to an authoritarian than being able to use people's rights as the means of their suppression.

Ironically this shows us why the 1st amendment is so important in the first place. They've shown us what they will do with a loophole, imagine what they would do if the amendment wasn't there at all. And keep in mind it is not only the 1st amendment they will use this tactic with. Eternal vigilance is the only path towards maintaining liberty.
