California lawmakers appear unlikely to pause the annual summer increase in the state's gasoline tax ahead of a May 1 deadline, Gov. Gavin Newsom’s office said on Monday.

Newsom, a Democrat, had previously expressed support for helping California motorists experiencing pain at the pump by waiting to implement a 5.6% tax hike scheduled to take effect on July 1. The tax is used to fund roads and other infrastructure projects; the state's Legislative Analyst's Office projected the tax will generate about $8.8 billion in revenue during the 2021-22 fiscal year.

But lawmakers will almost certainly fail to stop the gas tax increase from taking place because they would need to pass legislation by Sunday in order to do so – and have yet to introduce a bill on the matte

California already has the nation's highest gas tax at 51 cents per gallon. The levy will rise to 53.9 cents per gallon at the beginning of July. Still, an analysis from LAO found it would only save drivers about 3 cents per gallon.
A three cent raise is not the end of the world, unless you are already paying an average of $5.68 per gallon. This just speaks to how out of touch the Democratic Party is with the lower and middle class Americans, and how the Democratic Party is becoming the party of elites, who can more than easily afford this...

People are already hurting, why make it worse?

It can be used to pay for the monthly gas stipends they plan to give to people who make their list. That's not me or you.

Because they can! They won’t face any consequences for their actions because Democrat.

Didn’t the people vote for the gas tax increase and then, later on, voted to KEEP it? Glad I don’t live in that cesspool anymore.

Why? because the socialists need to tear down the country starting with its foundation. Intentional destruction so the government can step in and save country. CA is fully on board, don;t know where the voters who stand opposed are hiding?

How the illegal aliens will get around is a puzzlement.

I love how "an analysis" from LAO figured out that the increase from 51 to 54 cents, will result in a 3 cent change to consumers.

Seriously though, they schedule these things ahead of time per law and more importantly, it's not my problem.
