I am more disturbed that our Javelin's are so bad that if we "made sure RUSSIA had them Ukraine would have better defenses". What do they do explode on launch.

Both Russia and the US has armed 3rd parties in disputes\armed conflicts with each other a number of times harkening back to the end of WW2.
Russia also spread nuclear tech leading to proliferation risks around the globe like North Korea.

The US fought a decade long proxy war with Russia in Afghanistan in the 80’s. The US supplied the weapons and defense contractors to train. It attracted Jihadists from around the world. Bin Laden was one of them and al-Qaeda was born.
When Russia retreated, the US left the war toys which came in handy as Afghanistan retreated into civil war.
The US could have abandoned its long term geo political goals and declined to get involved.
