Robberies, theft, shoplifting should not even be an issue for most brick and mortar stores especially for large department stores.

Why? Its very simple. They can all just remodel their stores so the merchandise and or the clerks are behind a barrier. Like at a bank, there is the customer waiting area/lounge, and the tellers are behind the security barrier. This type of setup can work for the big pharmacies like CVS/Walgreens, even supermarkets. Customers come in, tell clerk what they want, clerk brings for payment. Nothing is exchanged without payment.

And remodeling is not going to be an issue. I see stores remodel all the time. Money is no problem. A lot of the mom and pop stores/small businesses are actually a part of a larger association, so I am not even sure they ought to classified as such. For example, all of mom and pop (in appearance only) 99c stores in NYC are run by Chinese. How is it that all of them are one ethnic group? They all sell the same brands practically. Plus they dominate the landscape. There is no Dollar General or Dollar Tree in NYC. Or the bodega/corner shops and convenience stores, being owned by Yemeni. How can these poor refugees from Yemen possibly be able to afford it? There must be some larger umbrella at work here.

With that out of the way, all these brick and mortar places can easily protect their merchandise. A simple redesign of their customer interface will solve the epidemic of crime. For clothing/apparel stores like Foot Locker, or Macy's that allow their customers try on items before buying, a security deposit can be collected before allowing the customer into the changing rooms. If they dont have CC, stores can accept cash.

Actually come to think of stores right now can just collect security deposit before allowing anyone in, cash or credit. The criminals likely all deal in cash only, so weeding them out will be easy. Stores can just accept payments and entry deposit in credit only. Criminals either must have cash in a bank, or good credit just to get into the store. Once stores have their CC on deposit, they can recoup any losses or destroy the credit of the criminal. Thereby making it impossible to even enter a store the next time. Unless of course the criminal steals, or fakes the CC, but that is getting harder and harder to do as tech advances.

Well yeh there is that too.

But at some point there has to be a contact between seller and buyer, and that is how the theft happens.

Porch pirates have been around since Amzn, Fedex, UPS have existed.

Now you can setup time and location to receive package instead of leaving packages for anyone to take. However at that point you basically just going to the store.

I think the future will be door dash type deliveries. Current stores will need just a few central warehouses where drivers will pick up the orders and deliver them to the customers. And when we get to the point of self driving delivery vehicles the deliver cost will go way down. When I go to Walmart now it seems half the staff is picking orders for pickup or delivery.

And this will free up current retail locations which can be replaced by more housing developments.

There is a store chain like that in Europe. You go in and look through a catalog. You place your order and it comes down a conveyor belt from the warehouse.

We Love our Freedoms too much in this country to shop at a prison. We like to go in and handle an item, try on an article of clothing, browse the racks and the shelves. We like our shopping.

I think the way to stop the shoplifters is to prosecute them. We used to do that, what happened? If some jerk comes in your store for a smash and grab you get to smash him and he cannot sue, the Police come arrest him and he goes before a judge that weighs his priors and makes a call but no one gets off with a wrist slap.

If a shoplifter is caught the store has the Right to post their name and photo at the entrance on the "Loser Board". We need to bring back public shaming and a board like that is almost as good as the Colonial Stocks they used for criminals.

I think when it comes to Porch Pirates they are the worse kind of scum because they have no idea what is in the box they are taking. It could be a toy a child saved up for months to buy. It could be grandmas medication. It could be GRANDMA!, her ashes.... When it comes to Porch Pirates they should be treated like Pirates and hung.

This is what Service Merchandise did in the 1980s

It seems like this would add quite a bit to the cost of things for additional labor in addition to the costs of the renovations.

Ah yes, the Rube Goldberg approach. Maybe we could all live within moated fortresses while we're at it in an attempt to stop crime. One must never deal directly with the source of the problem.
