Myself, I believe in equality for all. That's why I refuse to toe the 'woke' line, and I do NOT capitalize black OR white (or any other racial designation for that matter, for the most part).
Have you noticed that most mainstream media outlets capitalize the “B” in “Black” when writing about Black people? Have you noticed the “w” in “white” doesn’t receive the same treatment?
It’s a well-intended but confusing practice that might be doing more harm than good.
The decision from the editors of The Associated Press Stylebook and Briefing on Media Law, which sets the standard for the language of journalism, came at the height of the Black Lives Matter movement in 2020.

The alternative companion to 'black'; is 'Caucasian', which is capitalized.
You never read 'Ebony'? Johnson Publishing always capitalized 'Black' and 'White'.
Next you'll be asking how referring to something as 'bad' could be a compliment.
I capitalize both Black and White here on CD for emphasis and out of respect for those races.
I think you are right OP about the media capitalizing the words or not but when they are talking about a Black criminal it is often a lower case black but when they are talking about White Supremacy what they are really emphasizing is WHITE !
