Ukraine has plenty of captured Russian soldiers that they can send over. If Russia executes the Americans, the USA can executes 20 Russians.

Put me in the "sucks to be them, but not our problem" camp.

They knew the risks going there, so they have to face the consequences without our government having to go out of their way to bail them out of this mess.

Ukraine never should accept fighters like that unless they're in back line training roles (unless they're actually CIA and the US govt. sent them in)

Creates too much of a propaganda opportunity and then the pickle of trying to horse trade with Russia to get them back etc.

80 years ago in that part of the world the captured soldiers were used to build roads, both as labor and construction material.

Mercenary is a mercenary.
What defines a mercenary? Or more specifically, what defines a member of the military protected by POW status? Once they are wearing the uniform of Ukraine and following the orders of Ukrainian leadership, are they then ordinary soldiers?

Ukraine is giving them $$$$ (probably our money) so why wouldn't these soldiers for hire sign up ?

https://www.standard.co.uk/news/worl...t-b986175.html

Foreign mercenaries are being offered $2,000 (£1,512) a day to fight against Russian troops as part of the new foreign legion, according to reports.
..
Ukrainian officials have claimed up to 16,000 soldiers had come forward after visa requirements were waved in order to attract troops.

Sounds dubious to me. Here is what I think.

1 In country Ukrainians would demand being paid also after hearing that
2 any funds the Ukraine government has will go to Ukrainians first probably
3 Any supplies, logistics, weapons and medical care will go to Ukrainians first
4 if captured or wounded Ukrainian government will see foreigners as a liability

Why anyone outside of Russians and Ukrainians would be involved with this mess, IDK.

The US should have stayed out and avoided this whole mess.

Ditto for Biden spouting-off about the US going to war if China attacks Taiwan.

They are now part of Ukraine's army...not residents of Ukraine but hired on for $$$.
So it's up to Zelensky to "do something".

A mercenary is a "gun for hire" and that's what these Americans did...get hired by Ukraine to fight for them...can't beat $2K a day.
