The Inflation Reduction Act, a landmark climate, health care and tax package that passed the Senate on Sunday and is expected to head to Biden’s desk after the House approves it on Friday, includes roughly $78 billion for the IRS to be phased in over 10 years. A Treasury Department report from May 2021 estimated that such an investment would enable the agency to hire roughly 87,000 employees by 2031. But most of those hires would not be Internal Revenue agents, and wouldn’t be new positions.
But goes on to say that most likely the hiring will be about 20-30k net new jobs.
Still about half of the nearly $80B (over ten years) will go towards enforcement and are looking for people that can handle a weapon.
The current president of the National Employees Treasury Union is Tony Reardon. He and the NTEU represent over 55k bargaining unit IRS employees. That DOES NOT include the approximately 2500 criminal investigators (1811 Special Agents) currently employed by the IRS who the union doesn't represent.
That’s a position description for a 1811 IRS Criminal Investigator (Special Agent). IRS Special Agents attend 6-7 months of training at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Glynco, GA. They conduct criminal investigations but don’t review standard tax returns or conduct audits. The 87K IRS employees that the Biden cabal wants to hire are IRS Tax Analysts and Tax Examining Technicians NOT special agents. Tax Analysts and Tax Examiners are unarmed and don’t have arrest authority. IRS Criminal Investigators and Tax Analysts/ Examiners have a completely separate chain of command. I'd be surprised of the IRS can find 20K people that are remotely qualified or interested in working as a tax analyst or tax examiner. It's a boring, tedious and sedentary job that takes a certain skill level and aptitude to do well. I'm no fan of the IRS and over reach by the federal government but I'm not losing any sleep over this.
well I know him too, but I was actually talking the local chapter president FOR the IRS since the claim appears to be the IRS donates money to get funding for itself. Treasury people do intermingle with IRS people. from time to time. NTEU has not represented 'Treasury' employees for a longgggggg time. Dunno how the regs for unions work, but its all over the cabinet.
The fact is, those that do not understand, see all IRS 'employees' as 'agents' when nothing is further from the truth.
the special agent designation in agencies that have them is a narrow window age and experience wise that make up an armed response.
Will there be special agents in the hiring? yep. cuz the age limit for such is 10 years or more LESS than a CSRS or FERS typical retirement age.
Do special agents for the IRS come under fire? well consider of all the federal agencies, the one that gets the most actual and threatened violence towards its employees is...wait for it...the IRS. CI invariably has to send someone to start the collection from someone who invariably published manifestos how income tax is illegal and their rural fenced compound exists separate from the united states and more often than not they meet the 3rd tuesday of every week to pledge allegiance to the ghost of adolf hitler and the 3rd reich in general, or they are on the money side of a drug cartel who have fondness for weapons as well.
so much BS being pushed around, I saw a snippet from the judge who had represented lois lerner - blamed her email loss on 'antiquated IRS systems' (which in itself is false) when the email system is and has always been the current version of outlook. What really happened is the SES had the ability to skip the auto archive of their emails at the time. So are people connected to he GOP that undue attention will be sent their way? well it has....
you see the BS about automation...almost 90% of the tax system is automated, EXCEPT for the 20M-ish people who insist on a paper return. and that drives most of the headcount in the service centers. Audits are also scored electronically. Might the code be gerrymandered to focus on conservative groups? you tell me. the judge said yes... And you all brag in person and online how you hide money from unca sam and like to deal in cash...
Like it or not, the tax gap each year IS rooted in the middle class which IS rooted around 75K per anum. So mccarthys and rubios tweets, are actually correct. There will ALWAYS be more audits in that income range - regardless of funding - simply because that income range oft does not use qualified tax prep who are a) apt to be correct and b) better at obscuring what is not correct. In other words, you cannot claim 75K per anum with a mortgage yet consistently drive newer BMW sedans registered to your brick laying biz. You do tho, and act all butt hurt when pinched...

If the NTEU contract says something over and above, it is because management has exercised their rights under OPM regulations to do something different. It can be revoked with a pen and you cannot strike. I have been NBU for about 10 years now so it really means nothing to me. The needs of the department or agency will always come first

As a former NTEU member when I was employed by another agency I respectfully disagree. When our agency failed to bargain grooming standards for uniformed officers the NTEU filed a grievance and we won our right to grow back facial hair. NTEU also grieved a major violation of Department of Labor regulations when it adjusted and completely changed employee shifts in the middle of a pay period to avoid paying overtime. When this grievance went to arbitration the arbitrator awarded the effected employees the lost over time plus interest. Besides grievances NTEU represents hundreds of my former agency's employees every year when they're charged to violating agency regulations. This includes violations like excessive use of force, tardiness, insubordination, conduct unbecoming, leave abuse, excessive absenteeism, misuse of government computers, lack of candor during interviews with investigation officers, misuse of government vehicles, etc. The NTEU also bargained with the agency for pay grade increases to GS-12 for journeyman employees. While the needs of the agency will always come first the NTEU ensures that the agency complies with the National Collective Bargaining Agreement between the agency and NTEU.

The subject line says "agents", which implies an officer with arrest authority. Instead, is it just "employees", such as lower level people who actually answer the phone when you call?
But those who are qualified to perform audits (presumably accountants, not an agent with arrest authority) will be needed for the stated reason.
Where are they going to get all these people who need certain levels of education, experience, etc.?
Just a comment on the entire reason for the IRS - nobody likes to pay taxes, but they're necessary for government operation and all the services we receive. And tax laws say what is taxable and what is not. Everybody should pay their share, regardless of income level. I suspect there is a lot of unreported income and that's illegal. I don't mind the IRS cracking down on such crimes.
You are right it is just employees. But out of the 80 billion over half is going to enforcement and less than 5% to taxpayer services.
Just an aside.
The IRS assures they are not increasing audits of middle class and small businesses. But only going after the evil rich and large corporation. From my experienc most small cash businesses have a lot of unreported income. If they really are looking to increase compliance these audits should be increased.
Does anyone believe the local deli (that probably pays some of it's employees off the books ) is reporting all income.
But they're adding 87,000 new agents. Who do they think they're fooling?
The ones that always believe Congress when they say their bills only tax the rich.
