Unless laws have changed, it is quite common for snowbirds to stay in FL for just over 6 months to declare residency in their condos mainly for tax purposes. They go to FL in November and return north at the beginning of May. Many return for the holidays in between.
My brother’s street is half empty during the winter due to snowbirds heading south. Driveways are plowed, house heat is reduced and pipes are drained. This has been happening for decades. However, some return for good in later life for family and medical reasons.

I think he’s referring to snowbirds who spend like 6 months and 1 day in Florida to claim Florida residence for tax purposes. He may have a point on some but the majority are people relocating permanently. New York just has too many negatives right now. If you’re a high cost, big government, state you must have some redeeming qualities NY doesn’t have enough of them. Upstate has none.

As I recall, Florida allows you a second license, with the same home address and number as your other state. A convenience. Also a long expiration date, maybe 8 years. Also, to fish in FL as a resident.
I would imagine they are moving because of $$$$. With WFH one can live anywhere now so why not move to a lower COL area.
imho, some are also leaving due to taxes, crime, & oppressive Liberal policies encroaching upon their freedoms. They also move to Florida to be near friends & family that have already left NY.

i predict it will make the red states redder and the blue states bluer. people move because they have to. i left NJ because the state is completely unfixable at this point. the covid nonsense put me over the edge

Bingo, unless you're already rich inside secluded gated communities, no one wants to pay state taxes for crime ridden cities.
