Possibly. What makes this seem possible is the fact that while New Zealand is a nation of immigrants, the influx of immigrants was halted under covid restrictions so that the population would indeed age on average. But is two and a half years enough to make a difference? Australia is not such a nation of immigrants.
But also, in 2020 there was a dip in death rates and in 2022 there is a rise in death rates. The 2020 dip was due to the elimination of flu deaths - there just wasn't any flu due to the covid measures. Consider that in the order of 1250 people did not die from flu in 2 1/2 years of covid restrictions. How many of those died of covid and now more recently, of flu itself? No idea but if that were the case then the excess deaths due to covid alone would be less than one thousand people.
Also consider that covid deaths were essentially non existent until delta hit and it hit hard. There are no more covid deaths now that delta is gone but still plenty of omicron cases.
