NO SCIENTIST SAYS WE HAVE LESS THAN A DECADE LEFT ON EARTH. If anyone says that, they are guilty of gross misinterpretation.
At the Paris Accords, they set a goal, to not exceed 2 degrees Celsius of warming by the end of the century; ie, the year 2099.-“ Recently we’ve been told that if we don’t take action in the next 10 years, there’s no way we can meet that goal.
There’s nothing dire projected to happen in 10 years. There’s nothing special about the 2 degree goal. But you asked what global mean temperature we should aim for. The answer apparently is no more than 2 degrees C (3.5 degrees F) higher than the current temperature. That would be success.
Your last question, what cost are we willing to spend to accomplish that, is really the crux of the issue. What we need is a good faith estimate of that cost and a robust debate about whether we are prepared to pay it.
I’m in my fifth decade of them claiming we only have 10 years to save the planet. Nothing has changed much since then.
Well, if it was nuclear bomb testing, don't tell Biden. He'd be dropping bombs all over the US next thing we know.
The cool period actually extended a little longer than 1975. The winters here in 1976 and again in 1977 were the coldest consecutive years on record. As I recall, some scientists were even proposing dropping coal dust (or something black) on the polar regions so the ice would soak up more sun and melt everything. Then, next thing we know, we're into global warming. Kinda make a person wonder ....
They never tire of offering stupid solutions that would just cause unintended consequences, aren’t they? That’s as bad as Bill Gates’ idea to put sand or chalk into the stratosphere to combat global warming. SMH
Wow, I had not heard/read of that. That's amazing-ly stupid!
That line of thinking brings me back to today's crazy propositions of injecting sulfur dioxide capsules in the upper atmosphere and the latest news is that a start-up has done just that, from Mexico.
Here in New York State we are fighting climate change by banning plastic shopping bags. I can buy as much plastic as I want, I just can’t put it in a plastic shopping bag.
Is climate change denial a sport or his it just spite? Maybe both.
I believe the scientists. The vast majorities of them. The skepticism was thrown out there by the fossil fuel industries campaign to tie it in as a bleeding heart liberal cause. Why? Huge profits and I mean huge profits.
The alternative hypothesis about socialist control and scientists (who individually have more education than 3-4 of deniers combined) throwing away their entire lives worth of study to lie and get a few grants. Are we serious here?
As for the rest of the world, that’s true. Not much more we can do, but lead the way. Unfortunately them following us in the past is what has caused the problems we are in. No one had a gun to their head, but we are complicit.
What they need to do is tell everyone what’s coming in a clear way. If in a 100 years there will be cat 5 hurricanes developing weekly and hillsides will be on fire, well then, it’s war footing time.
I've always thought that the 1950-1975 period of cooling was attributed to Nuclear bomb testing (nuclear winter). We exploded hundreds if not thousands nuclear bombs in the atmosphere back then. Since the ban of atmospheric testing, there has been a rebound in temps. Makes some sense to me.
Back in the 1970s, the "consensus by the experts" was that we're entering a new ice age and believe it or not, they blamed carbon as being responsible for that cooling.
I’ve never heard that. Nuclear winter is what is predicted if we had all out nuclear war. I don’t think the nuclear tests that were conducted are thought to have impacted climate. The temperature records don’t show any cooling in 1950-1975. https://www.climate.gov/news-feature...al-temperature
