Virginia is welcoming the NBA Washington wizards and the NHL Capitols into northern Virginia soon. New stadium is being built to provide a safe venue for both teams and fans alike.

https://www.alxnow.com/2023/12/13/ju...omac-yard/This is a huge win for GOP Younkin and Virginia, as it continues towards conservative values,

At least fans won’t be getting assaulted (as much) or robbed (as much) in northern Virginia vs in the deep DC politically run police department which oversees skyrocketing crime, carjackings and assaults.

Win here for Virginia and Republicans.

Couple points on this

For starters, your link doesn't go to the actual story. Secondly, I do not see crime listed as a reason for the move. Crime was mentioned in an article I found about a concern for the area, but is not why they are moving Quite simply, Virginia is earmarking more money (assuming everything gets the final approval) for the new arena than Washington D.C was for renovations to the current 26 year old arena. Not to mention Alexandria is about as far removed from a conservative bastion as you can get.

Yeah, need the OP to support their claims that it was about crime and fan assaults etc.

That is exactly the reason. Both the Wizards and Capitals, along with the current Capital One Arena are all owned by the same group. That group will continue to maintain and profit off of Capital One Arena adding more concert venues. and college Basketball. The proposed site for the new arena is like 5 miles away from Cap One Arena.
The crime angle was nothing more then a false assumption from the likes of Breitbart and a few others. All BS.

Here you go. Typical media ignore the crime because it doesn’t fit the narrative, and DC is not safe.

And more links pointing the DC crime being a factor.

Sounds like Oakland. Hostile political environment, whacky fan base (woke) along with horrific crime in the area.

They've lost 3 teams. (Well the A's are still technically there, but they're moving to Vegas real soon).

Good points. The bandwagon and lack of fan fervor are factors. Many democrats don’t attend the games (maybe due to crime concerns) and with DC about 95% democrats, that means a lot of empty seats.

We had one guy crippled and others almost beaten to death for wearing SF Giants caps at Giants vs. Dodgers games in Los Angeles. The local Latino hoods treat those SF Giants hats like colors from a rival gang. I used to go to Dodgers games all the time in the 70s and that never happened. Sad state of affairs.

They are moving where thy can build a mixed use development that will include office space, residential, and retail. It’s a real estate play for the most part.

That’s the new reality for team owners. Look at SoFi, Levi’s, Gillette, Fenway, and next, the A’s and Bears. Selling tickets and beer is nice but collecting rent year round from restaurants and apartments is better

I don’t consider Virginia to be a bastion of conservatism, but I love to see these teams abandoning DC since it is such a cesspool.
