One tunnel in the Gaza Strip was wide enough for a top Hamas official to drive a car inside. Another stretched nearly three football fields long and was hidden beneath a hospital. Under the house of a senior Hamas commander, the Israeli military found a spiral staircase leading to a tunnel approximately seven stories deep. These details and new information about the tunnels, some made public by the Israeli military and documented by video and photographs, underscore why the tunnels were considered a major threat to the Israeli military in Gaza even before the war started.
But Israeli officials and soldiers who have since been in the tunnels — as well as current and former U.S. officials with experience in the region — say the scope, depth and quality of the tunnels built by Hamas have astonished them. Even some of the machinery that Hamas used to build the tunnels, observed in captured videos, has surprised the Israeli military.
Given Hamas' demonstrated ability to build an extensive tunnel system, it's a shame that they didn't use their talents to build a subway system to serve the densely populated Gaza City area. But then again, that would have actually benefitted their people, and we've seen that they want no part of that.
You'd think all that work could have been put to better use.
They sure could have. You'd expect a bit more civic duty from a governing body, eh?
Can't even build a bomb shelter for their people whenever they go off an lob rockets into Israel.
The Gazan people have built their own cities and businesses, schools, hospitals. They certainly could have put the money to better use. The 'occupation' is just an excuse, we've seen what they have had autonomy to do with their daily lives. If Hamas wasn't so bloodthirsty maybe they wouldn't be holding them back so much. Maybe.
After Oct 7th, perhaps they see what a 'real' occupation looks like if they want IDF soldiers and tanks on their streets 24/7 because they have demonstrated it isn't safe leaving them to the 'previous Occupation style'.
