Fast food work was never meant to be a "career". It was a job for teenagers to transition to the larger workforce, doing real full time work. It was a job for part timers to earn pick-up money. Maybe something for ex-cons to earn a living when nobody else would hire them.

Democrats will tell us that this Foster’s Freeze is a poorly run business, and THAT is why they couldn’t absorb the minimum wage increase. Nothing is ever the fault of poor Democrat policy.

Teenagers are generally not available for the busiest time for fast food, lunch. As they are in school, can't base a business around that.
It's increasingly the elderly you see staffing these positions. Who have been left behind by changes in the job market and couldn't upskill but still need an income.

And yet two restaurants partially owned by Gov. Newsom are advertising job openings for $16 and hour, not the $20 he requires by law. Funny how that works. Also, a major contributor to his campaign got a waiver for the $20/hour because he restaurant makes bread as well as sandwiches (Panera Bread).
I think In and Out already had a decent wage, so $20 may not have been as much of a stretch for them.
"Decent" is of course a matter of opinion. People wanted a "decent" wage of $15 just a few years ago. Now, it's $20 and that will just continue to increase.
The minimum wage was already $16 and In-N-Out was paying about $17-$18 according to their signs, they are now advertising $20. There was some variations between FF restaurants seemed to be in the range of $16-$18. Now, every single sign I've seen has been $20. So where In-N-Out was paying slightly more, there no longer appears to be a difference between them and McDonald's.
But as expected I am seeing the same rates being asked for at a couple of the local "Mom And Pop" restaurants we go to.
