Speaking as a memeber of the military. I would say the main goal everyday is just to survive. No matter what job you do theres always a bad egg and the military is no diffirent. However 99% of us are good hard fighting soldiers, Sailors, Marines and Air men.
No one said everyone was a Lyndie England, but it's certainly more than 1% who act in a criminal nature.
Look at japanupdate.com and you'll see military crime in Japan reported weekly. Not all is heinous, but robbery, theft, drunken driving, etc. is a crime.
Keep in mind folks, this could be a 250lbs, 5'5", pimply, basement dwelling single male who is considering the pros and cons of washing the layer of oil from his body today. I'm not saying that's the case, I'm just saying that you don't know.
He's a person who removed his location from his description which was England. He's also a person who spends time arguing in favor of socialism on this forum. Take it with a grain of salt.
In regard to war crimes: They're tragic. I haven't been in the position to commit them because I couldn't serve. However, I know they're a fact of war. Those who commit them must be brought to justice, but that doesn't take a thing away from those who serve honorably... as the OP would have.

"250lbs, 5'5", pimply, basement dwelling single male" - have you been checking yourself in the mirror again?
If you watched the video, you would hear Hugh Thompson say that most of the company did not actively participate in the massacre, but did nothing to stop it. It takes much more of a man to stop the evil, and Hugh did.
"There were numerous occasions when you were sent out on missions of 'search and destroy'... in military-speak that means to shoot anything moving and set the village on fire... The results were almost always catastrophic... Lt. Calley was just one of the few who got called on it." [RIGHT]— Jim Linnen

All agreed...but then on that note, what makes the military any more different than a population anywhere on earth? theft, drunk driving, robbery occurs absolutely everywhere, and I certainly don't see a commanding difference (or more of it) on US bases.
I'm sure japanupdate's got the bads, but it sounds like a college campus (not even as bad as one IMO)
I agree that war crimes do occur in EVER& war... I am sure there are many, many American soldiers who have raped and killed children of other countries and get away with it... after all, the thralls of war tend to hide crimes easily... I make NO excuses for them... It is much more than 1%... my father told me that while serving in military, he witnessed many times where the women and children were raped and killed... what could he do? These people would probably kill him if he reported it.... and in war, they need people at the front lines... he was expendable...Its no wonder you see so many soldiers on anti-depressants... This is one time I have to agree with gorgeet... crime is crime... I don't care what circumstances you want to bring up... I believe in a life for a life and I don't apologize for it...
