What is legally possible, and what sells are two different things?

If everybody aired up their tires and drove the speed limit, it would be equivalent to drilling in ANWAR in terms of the effect on the price of gas. However, nobody wants to do anything but whine anymore and pass the buck to somebody else.

So what do you mean that if we all put 90 lbs of air in our tires the price of gas will go back to 2.00 dollars a gallon WoW ! is it really that simple , I wish! The price of gas is where the oil people want it . when they slow down production it gave them an excuse to raise the prices . NO one has been able or will to explain why!!!! our own oil . ***oil that is pumped from our own wells here in the US has to be 140.00 a Barrel and why this is not gouging . I could care less what the French are germany has to pay for crude oit ( they don't have what we have in the ground ) so let them get stuck and have TO PAY THE HIGH PRICE . we are not them . and if that the standard then raise the price of our food that we grow here. Like eggs maybe they should be paying 14. 00 a dozen. then the ranchers could afford the fuel.

I disagree - we do not need a National 55 mph speed limit. This has been tried before and was a total disaster.

As an aside - I wonder if the Autobahn could be set at 55??

I agree with you that there are simple measures that everyone can take that will increase fuel efficiency - tire pressure being one of them. I'm now checking once a week at home - takes but a few moments and I know it does good.

this is the most liberal, socialistic, democrat talking point I have ever read. please note the example of the "hummer" going 85. couldn't have been an accord or something. has to be a "hummer" so the image could be created. totally typical liberal democrat talking points and policies. tell people what to do, tax the living crap out of them so they can hire more people to tell you what to do. if you don't do as we say, we are going to write you a ticket because you are a criminal. how disgusting unoriginal. oh, and the most entertaining part of this post is the "sacrifice for the common good" statement. I shudder when I read that. I heard hillary say that once when she was talking about crippling the middle class with taxes to give to the worthless. what is this country coming to?

Its a small sacrifice that could really help in the long run. I know powerful engines and fast driving is part of American culture and people don't want to give that up, but sometimes we need to come together as a country and sacrifice for the common good. To enforce this new speed limit, the government should hire thousands of policemen, providing both jobs and revenue. This is an idea that could really work but nobody wants to suggest it.

The one state that had it right. For about 12 years, anyway.

I completey agree! Nothing makes me cringe more than the bleeding heart do gooders who cry to Big Brother to enact bans, restrictions, or more laws on things that they're bothered by. The same do gooders usually call for bans on smoking, bans on offshore/ANWR oil drilling, more public assistance, more laws to protect "our" children, and more environmental laws to protect a few birds or snakes.

A good example of the speed limit debate is what has been happening in some parts of the Phoenix area (where I live). Many newcomers & slow drivers were bothered by the fact that the freeways around here have a high number of speeders, so they begged & pleaded with the state Legislature & the Governor's office to take action. Since the state is in a serious budget deficit right now, they approved a measure to install photo radar cameras on freeways which will cite anybody who drives more than 76 MPH. Radar cameras can issue multiple citations within a short amount of time ... which is an easy way for the government to make money off of citizens who drive a little fast simply to GET somewhere!

The passing speed does have to be higher than the permissible speed. Otherwise, you'd take forever to get past someone.
