Times are tough for a lot of people today - especially the lower rungs of the economic ladder. I read of one place in Alabama or Mississippi, can't recall which, where people were spending (as of 3 weeks ago) 16% of their income on energy costs. That is very, very sad. Lots of people there chosing between an empty gas tank and an empty stomach.
Be thankful if you're living comfortably - there are lots who aren't....

There are a lot more of those who are living comfortably but on the brink of losing everything either directly or indirectly because of these gas prices. I am in a deep debt hole myself, like many Americans, and my job security is very shaky right now. I don't even have enough savings for one month after losing my job, and I can't save because of all this debt and the fact I am living way over my means. I am not able to cut back anymore until after the first of the year when my lease on my luxury apartment runs out. I hope the bubble burst by the Christmas shopping season or I am screwed.

Like they say in the media, many (maybe most) Americans are living virtually paycheck to paycheck... And job security for many is a thing of the past - not a pretty picture, but a real one.
Hang in there - and cut back on any expenses you can - stop eating out, combine trips into one wherever possible, see if you can car pool... I'd cut up any credit cards you have - and concentrate on paying some of that debt down. And get into more affordable housing when your lease expires....
If you have to, try to get a part time job on the weekends - if that is doable in your position....
Fish, you are a peculiar one Here's the deal, we have been hearing for month's on end all the moaning and nashing of teeth about how bad the economy is and the rescession and blah blah blah, and to that I would always respond, as long as people are still lining up in the morning to get their 3 dollar double fancy with whipped cream at starbuckles, thing's cant be that bad!! Well, I still say the same because every where I go in the greater Seattle area, there are help wanted sign's, people are looking for good help! The point is, people need that gallon of gas, that cup of coffee was buying!!
I'm with sanrene, I don't set foot in the starbuck's!
If yuo went thru the 70's recession this is noit bad at all unless your in certin parts of the country were unemploymne is high or you over spent and put yourself in to much debt. Overall the unemloymant nation wide is historically low and inflation is not terrible. In teh 70's unemploymant was very high and inflation was double digit. Ga swne t from 39 cents to 1.35 overnite and salaries were much lower. The panic to buy small cars whether smart or not was there as well as a general the sky is falling by many. But most who lived thru it learned not to over extend yourself any more financially.
