ROME - The Defense Ministry says hundreds of soldiers have been deployed in cities across Italy as part of government measures to fight street crime.

In Rome, some 400 men and women are deployed at subway and railway stations and at an immigrant center. They are not expected to be immediately deployed in the capital's historic center. In Milan, they are patrolling the Duomo cathedral and sensitive sites such as the U.S. consulate and the synagogue.
Lt. Col. Mario Busi says the deployment of soldiers — 3,000 in total — began Monday and will continue through the week.
The measure proposed by Premier Silvio Berlusconi's government was approved by parliament last month and will remain in effect for six months.
I have advocated the use of the US military to fight street crime and drug trafficking in the cities in several threads posted on this forum. I have also advocated the creation of paramilitary forces, as in Israel, to patrol the streets in the inner cities where murder, drugs and street crime take a horrible toll on the population. Italy is following the lead of Israel and other western countries in using military and paramilitary personal to return civil order to the crime and drug infested cities.

The police in many European countries are para-military from the on-set. This is due to the size of the nation and in some cases (Spain, Italy) it sends it's national policemen to other cities rather than their native one. This is supposed to lessen corruption in the police for one thing. The nations that have para-military national police give their policemen benefits that our police, sadly, do not enjoy such as use of military Bxs and large discounts in buying a house (for officers who are married, single officers get a break on rent or stay in a barracks as they are often transfered about) or an automobile.

Oh my... how anti-European of them. They should just legalize whatever they consider "crime".
