WASHINGTON - Russia's blitz into the former Soviet republic of Georgia has exposed starkly the limits of US military power and geopolitical influence in the era following the invasion of Iraq.
Go surge, maintain the status quo and hope for the past instead of dealing with the future. Oh yeah Bush/McCain really showed them Russkies a thing or two.
Had we not been in Iraq and had we not set bad precedent with Kosovo, the U.S. would still be "limited" in this "crisis." We might have had moral authority and have been in a better position to contribute to a diplomatic solution, but even our authority, moral or otherwise, has been lost.

Regardless of the reasons the outcome is just as you say.
I'm not so sure that a defeat in Georgia means closure to the conflicts in that region. My reading of some stuff today indicates that the Ukraine area may be a different situation for Russia.
Though the situation in Georgia is nothing but tragic, it doesn't mean that all is lost for Western interest in the area. Just need to adjust strategy and tactics.
Why do some Americans feel like it's United States' responsibility to look after a sorry ass country like Georgia? Why, is it b/c of our desire to plant missile shield in their country? Even if it is so, exactly how does that decision affect the average American?
