Our country was founded with freedoms we have allowed to be eradicated. Here is a partial list President Bush has been responsible for.

Executive Order giving him sole authority to impose martial law, and suspend habeas corpus. This gives hime dictatorial power over the people, without and checks and balances.

The government can jail you for life without charges, without a trial and without a lawyer.

Executive Order #10999 - allows the government to take over all modes of transportation.

EO #11000 allows the government to mobilize civilians into work brigades under government supervision.

EO # 11921 Provides the President can declare a state of emergency that is not defined, and Congress cannot review the action for 6 months.

Senate Bill #1873 allows the government to vaccinate you with untested vaccines against your will.

Thr FDA says Americans do not have the right to know which foods are genetically modified.

HR 1528 requires you to spy on your neighbors, including wearing a wire. Refussal would be punishable by a mandatory prison sentence of 2 years/

The government claims the power to seize all financial instruments: currency, gold, silver, and everything else t if they deem an emergency exists. - Treasury dept letter 8/12/2005

The Patriot Ast permits the following:

Secret FBI and police searches of your home and office.

Secret government woretaps on your phone, computer and Internet activity.

Secret Investigations of your bank records, credit cards and other financial records.

Secret investigation of your library and book activities.

Secret examination of your medical, travel and business records.

The freezing of funds and assets without prior notice or appeal.

The creation of secret watch lists that ban those named from air and other travel.

I am not trying to lump all the blame on GW, but this has all transpired under his watch. Prior Clinton was responsible for wiretapping millions of Americans.

There must be a solution but I don't think it is with either the Republican or Democratic parties,. They seem to be complicit in this take over of freedom, willing to sell out at the highest bidder.

I think it is time we stop arguing about main party candidates and make change in the system.

Did you know the 16'th Amendment was not ratified by all the states? we were duped. Did you know there is no law requiring you to file a tax form? Did you know the government does not have the right to tax the labor of Americans?

Some scary thoughts huh? I suspect there are some out there that will attack me for this post because I am questioning what we have been told. The fact remains I am against big government that uses intimidation and police force to control the population. I want the Constitution to mena something again. I want America to be a democracy for the people, not another fascist regime serving the haves at the expense of the have nots. No, I am not advocating Socialism. I want the Democracy we started with and our forefathers gifted to us.

How do we get back there?

Wow, you're gullible.

Have you looked up the executive orders you stated that "President Bush has been responsible for"? I have. The ones you cited with EO numbers were enacted during the cold war, for the purposes of reacting to a nuclear strike from the Soviets.

Do you always just copy/paste the black-helicopter emails you get without verifying any of the "facts" they contain? Just another sheep following the herd, I guess...

Did you know that an Amendment doesn't have to be? Check Article V of the Constitution.

Maybe you should read it occasionally.

I know those of you that are strong proponents of civil liberties will disagree, but my perspective on the government checking up on me is this:

1. Any place you want to purchase something on credit can look into your financial history (to a limit, of course). Nothing new there.

2. If you have nothing to hide, who cares what they look for in your house. My concern would be if you were going to go through my house, and you don't find anything, you are responsible for anything broken or cleaning up the mess.

3. If you think you are that important that the government will go after you specifically out of the 300,000,000 (that's million with an "M") people here, get over yourself. If they do single you out, there's probably a pretty good reason.

To me, my safety and the safety of other Americans is more important than worrying about someone listening to my phone calls. Hard to call anyone privately or not if your dead from a plane crash/bomb/chemical attack, etc. Keep me safe and listen in all you want!

Regarding #1, the government can access a lot more than financial history, and the limits are slipping away from us. The government is answerable to us, the citizens, and if we are not vigilant about their activities, if we don't speak out when they cross the line, we will lose the freedoms that have defined us as a people.

Regarding #2, they don't pick up or repair. They don't handle your stuff with care, and when they find nothing, they don't apologize. Been there, done that.

Regarding #3, they select people all the time, based on criterias we don't have access to. And sometimes they screw up, but they have laws in place that prohibit you from suing them and recovering damages. There are people who've been targeted by the IRS, had their assets frozen, lost homes and businesses, and it's been a mistake. One number off on the social security number, or a duplicate name. And with the government in the name of security creating more lists, changing the criteria for defining who's dangerous and who's not, and doing this secretly, without public purview, if people don't start now crying out in protest, then the Constitution, the vision of our forefathers, just quietly fades away.

Nah, you don't end up in jail for speaking out against leaders, you end up someplace much more favorable.

...and sometimes you just luck out and end up on a benevolent gubmint s-list for no reason other than serving your country in both military and civilian life...

Republics die when the people decide that the government needs to protect them not that the people need to protect the government from the tyrants that would destroy it in the name of security.

Check the airline security thread for more comments. Maybe these threads should be merged.

This is exactly the reason why our freedoms are slowly being erroded.."for our safety".

We've been free since 1776. Yes there have been bumps along the road.
9/11 did more harm to the American psyche than anything else before it.

What you said above is precisely what terrorists want..fear. And with all these acts signed "to protect us" I would venture that the terrorists have won..all with a single event. Now everyone is scared that it will happen again so they gladly "give up". No, it won't affect you today..but if you ever make "that list" for whatever reason, even a mistake, you will NEVER get off it. But just remember that you wanted it for your own safety.
