Where is our moral center America??!! I am sure that like tens of millions this Sunday, many of you will watch this "great" "iconic" football game that has become a staple in our culture. But am I the only one here that seems to have a problem with this? Lets break this down...

You mean to tell me that....
with the millions that die every year from cancer and other diseases
with the tens of thousands that suffer from lack of education
with all the impoverished and depressed right in our own communitites
with all the hate and violence that fills that streets of every major city
with the wasting away of our natural world
with the mass extinction of thousands of creatures that will soon be lost to us
with the destruction in places like
New Orleans, Darfur(sp?), Somalia, etc...

And you also mean to tell me that.....
in one day we will watch people throw a ball and make millions doing it
in one day that ONE commercial will cost more than a whole towns wages
for a lifetime
in one day we will take away from God and put it into some useless, futile,
joke that will have no great impact on the future
in one day hundreds will die of incurable diseases that could be solved if only
for more finances, meanwhile we pay upwards of ten thousand for
a single ticket

I ask you again, people of this forum, where is our moral center? Why have we fallen so far? How can we call ourselves this great generation of progress, when we fall to our basic insticts everyday? When has it become ok for a teacher to make a small small fraction of even the third string kicker that sees no action this Sunday?

Why has pornography flooded the hearts and minds of the world, while children, CHILDREN!!, lie in hospital beds while their parents watch them suffer and die! Are we so loathsome that 'nerve endings' will determine the course of BILLIONS?!

Why has alcohol become so dear and near to our hearts when its damage is so wide spread and its makers greedy wallets become bigger?! When will the death toll be enough?! How many zeros must a number have before it becomes to much?

Will we not be the better generation? It is up to us? Will we do nothing?

I am afraid I already know this answer. If this made you feel uncomfortable in any way, act on it, you are correct for feeling this way. Do not think you are alone.

Don't give into this Sunday when commercialism rears it's ugly and destructive head. Everything I just described will be very present and ready this Sunday. Be the better person, and say, ENOUGH!!!!!!

The reasons you stated are why people watch it to begin with. It is an escape from reality.

Exactly... what are we supposed to do, sit around every day and worry about the world?? There's a time & place for social consciousness, and Super Bowl Sunday is not one of them. I personally couldn't give a rat's patooty about it, and will actually be performing in a concert (classical) that day. But for everyone who will be watching it, I wish them a fun and relaxing game!

However, one thing I agree with in the original post, is that athletes (and actors/singers for that matter) are WAAAAY overpaid... it's quite disgusting, considering the poverty in this country, and how underpaid certain professions are. My father often longs for the "good old days" of baseball, when it was about playing the sport - and not how much they made from contracts & endorsements. Anyway, I'll end the rant there, so as not to rain on anyone's parade.

I'm not keen on football, but I love the ads!!!

The Superbowl is one of the greatest way of celebrating capitalism (the very thing that provided us with the facilites so that today our children don't have to die of easily curable diseases) and also of humanism, just look at how much your request was not taken seriously by the entries above.

We use sports to channel our fighting instincts which we used for centuries to burn down neighbouring villages. We need this to make us feel strong and to maintain our fragile social system! (ooooo.... deep!)
