I am ASTOUNDED that they didn't review the machine for spyware. You can pick the stuff up from a simple typographical error when entering in a url. The first thing I thought of when I read this was the Salem witch trials.
People who have ZERO technical knowledge simply lack a fundemantal understanding of what is possible when exposing a computer to the internet without (and in some cases WITH) the proper security software installed.
Unless this person was actually TEACHING a computer class, she should not be held responsible for this.
My jaw literally dropped when I read this. What do you think?
I just read this story. This is just crazy!!! I can't believe she could go to jail. Am I missing something? It does not sound like she did anything wrong.
I think we need more facts to really come to a conclusion. This was a 6-person JURY that convicted her, so there's probably more to think about than first meets the eye. For example, if it turned out that she left images of porn up on the screen - projected from the computer - during a full 2-hour class, would that perhaps make one think that perhaps she could have unplugged the computer or the projector or done something to keep the images out of the classroom? I'm just skeptical that what we're dealing with here is images of a few popups that were breifly flashed up in front of a class full of kids.
Agreed, but put it in perspective. Someone who is not used to that sort of thing might just freeze. I mean, our own president kept reading to little kids after he was told our country was under attack, lol. I can easily see someone who is not used to this content freezing up and not knowing what to do. I've seen I.T. people freeze up when it happens to them.
Then you have to think "Who in the world would be dumb enough, or better yes CRAZY enough to show this content in a classroom to multiple kids?". It just doesn't fit. Even if she was a perv, there is no way she would think that she would get away with it. Also, many of these sites will continue pop-ups as you are closing the windows. She may have been trying to close them and just gave up. So it appeared she was doing nothing.
Above all, the one thing that was NOT done was a search for spyware. That just amazes me. How can you destroy someone's life without doing full due-dilligence? That is the only thing I know for sure in that story. They never did the spyware search. Hopefully they'll insist on a full examination by an FBI computer forensic expert and appeal.
