I hear so much about how good the Reagan years were, but all I remember is high unemployment and my dad getting laid off. Correct me if I am wrong, but what did Reagan do good?

He kept us out of a major war, which is a reasonably good accomplishment. I'm not a huge fan, but I can acknowledge that much.

The high unemployment was a leftover from Jimmy Carter. During Carter's administration there was double digit unemployment and inflation. It was during his administration that Democrats held the office of the President and a majority of the legislature. Reagan cut taxes to begin the economic recovery and strengthened our national defense to oppose Soviet expansion which had greatly increased speed during Carter's years.

he stopped the cold war. he restored a sense of pride in america. he was basically a positive person. each president brings good things. on the down side. he was a self appointed economist who informed the academic community that debt was meaningless. many of our current woes stem from this. he was a b rate movie actor trying to play economic guru, big mistake.
from a very personal note i was the only one not cheering when they pulled down berlin wall.
i am old enough to remember the stories about third reich.

There are many sources of information concerning the Reagan presidency, enough to keep you reading for a year. Were those years perfect? No, no administration comes through unscathed, but I must say those eight years were pretty good to me and unlike our new pending first lady, I probably was most proud to be an American at that time in my adult life.

Anyone can get laid off not matter how good a President is. People have been laid off during many President terms. What about the people that have been laid off when other people have been President??

Reagan helped the economy very much. His approval rating was like 90 percent. We need another Reagan!

Much of the economic turmoil in the early Reagan years were due to economic circumstances he inherited. He certainly had flaws (James Watt is the first thought that pops into my mind), but he did take a country that was in a malaise and give it pride again, stood up to the Soviet Union and substantially lowered incremental income tax rates.

I know a lot of posters will disagree with each point made here, but I think history generally shows this to be true, whether you liked him or not.

Reagan's approval rating ranged between 35 and 68 percent according to Gallup.

I can find fault with Reagan, but we can all be grateful to him for beating the Soviet empire without war. Compared to the current occupant of the White House he was the second coming of Solomon.
