I'm glad Texas has taken this posture. Reality is that people need access to education all our lives. To be allowed free education for a high school diploma is great & should be extended to all ages.
Well ;looking at the dropout rates in the big cities a GED maybe the best thing many in this generation can get. This maybe the first time a generation will do more poorly than their fathers and mothers.Signs of things to come.
I support public school education to a point! This new age limit is ridiculous! I would say over the age of 19 and you pay for school on your own or get your GED.
What is sad about this is the idea that any adult should receive an education for free. An adult person's education shouldn't be taxpayer supported as it steals wealth from others who might very well prefer to keep that money for their own education. While I have no problem with the government helping provide education for children, which I can justify as an investment in infrastructure; further education should be paid for by the student. this can be achieved by means of loans based on assessing the person and the field in which they are studying. States could thereby encourage students to enroll in productive education such as health care, business management, engineering, various sciences, and physical trades which would lead to real world employment and not just a fluff diploma with no prospects of a job.
is nothing wrong with studying any subjects but the student should understand that the government's duty isn't to waste money without a return of investment. If as a student you desire to study and become an authority on, say for example existential philosophy, you should do this on your own time and not the taxpayer dime.
I suspect this is in response to the influx of Hispanic immigrants, the same had to be done in my area (but not statewide) because the dropout rates rose with immigration.
