I asked a question whether his religion had anything to do with the extent of his punishment....since he was charged with espionage rather than treason....
Isn't it interesting how we are captivated by James Bond movies, spy novels, and the 'excitement' and suspense of it and when it really happens....
Israel is NOT our "ally." We do not have a mutual defense treaty with them.
The Israelis kidnapped Mordechai Vanunu from a neutral country (an international crime, incidentally) for revealing their nuclear secrets, imprisoned him for 18 years, and have had him effectively under house arrest for 4 1/2 years.
As I said, when they want to show mercy to him, we can deal with the scumbag Pollard as though he is a human being. If not, we should give him what spies normally have gotten throughout history.
The extent of Pollards spying has yet to be fully realized as indicated in my previous post, as there are apparently other spies connected with this case.
In any event, Pollard was acting on behalf of another nation to steal classified information from the United States, he was tried and convicted as a spy. I could care less if it was the location of one of Israel's enemies on the back of a single dinner napkin and he only did it once.
The greater question might be, why on earth does Israel, a nation that is not just an ally but a nation that has a "special" relationship with the US constantly and repeatedly steal our classified information and yet remain "a special relationship"?
No he should not be afforded a pardon just because influential entities in America are behind him. He should receive the punishment the law has on the books for his crime.
The problem in cases like this is that due to classified information, the public only knows the outer fringes of what actually took place and what led up to it. Here is what I found on what looks to be an official website on the issue:
Jonathan Pollard was never indicted for harming the United States.
Jonathan Pollard was never indicted for compromising codes, agents, or war plans.
Jonathan Pollard was never charged with treason. [Legally, treason is a charge that is only applicable when one spies for an enemy state in time of war.]
Jonathan Pollard was indicted on only one charge: one count of passing classified information to an ally, without intent to harm the United States.
The Facts of the Pollard Case
If this is correct, there is all possibility he will be pardoned as a good faith gesture to Israel. He probably should also be deported there to live out the rest of his life.
What if all of this is really true? What if there was a 'secret' alliance with Weinberger and the Government/Judge...what if 'we' did not uphold our plea agreement with Pollard; what if it is true that both governments knew what Pollard was doing and the intent was to use Pollard as a 'buffer' of some sort re: intelligence...and what if Pollard did not know that the Chinese were going to be given any of this information...does this change things? Make his release reasonable to allow him to be taken to Israel? Pardoned?
It is impossible for Pollard to spy for Israel. Since Israel is an ally, it can't be called spying, it is simply sharing pertinent information among friends. That, of course, assumes that our nation should HAVE any friends or diplomatic relations with ANY country.
